Hampton, Mets close out Cards, clinch pennant

Next stop, the World Series. The New York Mets held up their half of a potential Subway Series showdown Monday by closing out the St. Louis Cardinals 7-0 in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series at Shea Stadium. Mike Hampton secured series MVP honors with an overpowering three-hitter as the Mets advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1986.
