No. 14 Philadelphia Phillies

Bobby Abreu Bobby Abreu hit .335 in 1999 with 20 homers and 27 stolen bases. David Seelig/Allsport

1999 Record: 77-85 (3rd in NL East)

The Philadelphia Phillies made a serious run at the National League East in 1999 before an injury to ace Curt Schilling triggered a late season collapse. And much of their hopes for the 2000 season still rest on his right shoulder.

Schilling is expected to be out of the starting rotation until mid-May while he recovers from off-season shoulder surgery. If he's not completely healthy, or takes longer to heal, Philadelphia will need newly acquired Andy Ashby to step up and be the team's ace.

The Phillies shining light in 2000 may be emerging star Bobby Abreu, who picked up much of the offensive slack after Scott Rolen went down last season with a back injury.

Abreu led the Phillies in five offensive categories, while finishing third in the NL in batting average and on-base percentage. Not bad for a guy in just his second full season. Abreu helps make Philadelphia my 14th best team in baseball.
