No. 10 Boston Red Sox

Pedro Martinez Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez went 23-4 with a 2.07 ERA last season. Ezra O. Shaw/Allsport

1999 Record: 94-68 (2nd AL East)

Last year the Red Sox won 94 games and gave the Yankees a race for the AL East crown. Boston settled for the wild card and Jimy Williams earned AL manager of the year honors, but the real hero was Pedro Martinez.

Martinez turned in one of the best pitching seasons in baseball history. He kept the Red Sox in the race with his ability to throw any pitch at any time. For Boston to contend in 2000, they have to get some help for Martinez in the rotation.

The list of other possible starters is full of question marks. Pedro's older brother Ramon made just four starts last season and Jeff Fassero had the worst year of his career. Bret Saberhagen is coming off of another shoulder surgery and Tim Wakefield pitched himself off the postseason roster in 1999.

If the Red Sox can get a dominating year out of just one other pitcher, they'll be dangerous. That makes them my 10th best team in baseball.
