No. 18 Los Angeles Dodgers

Opponents hit only .222 off Kevin Brown in last season. Ezra O. Shaw/Allsport

1999 Record: 77-85 (3rd in NL West)

The Los Angeles Dodgers finished 23 games behind Arizona in the NL West last year. And, just as they did after their disappointing '98 campaign, the team is trying a quick and expensive fix.

The Dodgers traded unhappy outfielder Raul Mondesi to Toronto for Shawn Green and then signed him to a 6-year, $84 million contract. The 27-year-old Green is a gold-glove right fielder and his left handed power stroke is suited nicely to Dodger Stadium. Still, the Dodgers won't seriously compete unless someone other than Kevin Brown starts getting hitters out.

Darren Dreifort needs to improve his .500 record of last season. Chan Ho Park's ERA has gone up each year since 1997 and Carlos Perez was a major free-agent flop last year. Pitching questions make the Dodgers my 18th best team in baseball.
