Safeco roof fixed after malfunction
SEATTLE (AP) -- The roof on Safeco Field has been fixed in time for the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians to play the first game in the AL division playoffs. Engineers at Safeco Field were scrambling to fix a glitch with the ballpark's retractable roof, which opened about half way before Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers, then started malfunctioning. The problem was fixed by Monday afternoon, and the roof was fully operational, Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale said. Normally the roof's three panels open or close one after another in an automatic sequence, but on Sunday, stadium staff had to use a backup system that opened one panel at a time, Hale said. The playoffs start Tuesday.
