NEW YORK (AP) -- The first three games of the AL and NL Championship Series drew TV ratings 21 percent lower than in 2000.

Game 1 of the ALCS between New York and Seattle, and Games 1 and 2 of the NLCS between Atlanta and Arizona -- all on Fox -- have averaged a 5.7 national rating.

That's down from the 7.2 averaged last year by Games 1 and 2 of the ALCS between the same teams on NBC, and Game 1 of the NLCS between New York and St. Louis on Fox.

Last year, two of the games were in prime time, when more people watch TV, and one in the afternoon. This year, just one of the first three games was in prime time.

The 2000 NLCS, which went five games, produced the lowest TV ratings ever for an LCS, 6.2. That was 18 percent worse than the previous low -- the 1998 NLCS between San Diego and Atlanta. Baseball began the league championship series format in 1969.

This is the first season under Fox's five-year $2.5 billion baseball contract, which gives the network exclusive rights to the postseason and All-Star game, plus some regular season games.

Each rating point represents a little more than 1 million TV homes.
