Roster shuffle Lopez included on Atlanta roster, could start WednesdayUpdated: Tuesday October 16, 2001 7:04 PM
PHOENIX (AP) -- Catcher Javy Lopez, sidelined since Sept. 30 with a sprained ankle, was a last-minute addition to the Atlanta Braves roster for their NL Championship Series against Arizona. "He looked real good today," manager Bobby Cox said before Tuesday's Game 1. "He didn't have any more pain from what he went through yesterday. He went through a very strenuous workout yesterday and looked good this morning." Lopez, who missed the final six regular-season games and the entire division series against Houston, wasn't in the starting lineup Tuesday. But he could start as soon as Wednesday's Game 2 and more likely by Game 3 on Friday, Cox said. "I don't think he could catch nine innings today or tomorrow, but by Friday he could be good to go," Cox said. "He can pinch-hit now without any problem at all." Lopez replaced Wes Helms on the 25-man roster. Paul Bako, who had started in place of Lopez, was in the lineup Tuesday. He was a late arrival in Phoenix after staying in Lafayette, La., for the birth of his son Monday following his wife's difficult pregnancy. Lopez, who hit .267 with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs this season, hurt his left ankle Sept. 30 in a collision at home plate with the New York Mets' Robin Ventura.
