ST. LOUIS (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile set an NL Division Series record and tied a record for any playoff game with five straight strikeouts against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Kile broke the previous record of four set by Kevin Brown of San Diego on Sept. 29, 1998, and Sterling Hitchcock of the Padres on Oct. 4, 1998. He tied the major league Division Series record set by David Cone of the New York Yankees on Oct. 8, 1995.

The NLCS and ALCS records are both five, by Curt Schilling of the Philadelphia Phillies on Oct. 6, 1993, and Mike Mussina of the Baltimore Orioles on Oct. 11, 1997.

Three pitchers have struck out six in a row in the World Series.

After walking Tony Womack on five pitches to start the first, Kile struck out Craig Counsell, Luis Gonzalez, Danny Bautista, Mark Grace and Matt Williams.

Bautista and Grace were caught looking at third strikes.

Kile had 179 strikeouts in 227 1/3 innings in the regular season. He had five strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings in the season finale, a 9-2 loss to the Astros that gave Houston the NL Central title.
