Seattle's Paniagua, Boston's Castillo disciplined by MLB

Posted: Wed May 16, 2001 at 6:22 p.m. EDT

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Seattle Mariners righthander Jose Paniagua has been suspended for three games for throwing at Boston's Manny Ramirez during the ninth inning of a May 9 game.

In a contest the Mariners would win, 10-5, Paniagua threw a ball over Ramirez's head in apparent retalation for an earlier incident. In the third inning, Frank Castillo hit Seattle first baseman John Olerud.

Both Paniagua and Castillo were fined an undisclosed amount, but the Red Sox righthander escaped suspension. The penalties were handed down by Frank Robinson, Major League Baseball's vice president of on-field operations.

Unless an appeal is filed, Paniagua's suspension will begin on Wednesday night, when the Mariners host the Chicago White Sox.

Paniagua has made 17 relief appearances for the Mariners and is 1-1 with a 3.43 ERA and one save over 21 innings. Castillo is 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA in eight starts for Boston.
