SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Andy Pettitte and Paul O'Neill have been mainstays in the Yankees' dynasty. Both helped New York inch a step closer to a fourth straight World Series appearance. Pettitte allowed three hits in eight innings and O'Neill hit a two-run homer as the Yankees posted a 4-2 triumph over the Seattle Mariners in Game One of the American League Championship Series. A member of the Yankees' rotation since 1995, Pettitte has been a key component of New York's four World Series titles in the last five years. On Wednesday, he took a no-hitter into the fifth and faced just three batters in all but one frame, giving up a run in the fifth. Pettitte (1-1) improved to 9-5 lifetime in the postseason. In two playoff starts this season, he has allowed two runs and 10 hits in 14 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old lefthander gave way to Mariano Rivera in the ninth and the closer endured an uncharacteristically wild inning. After allowing a one-out double to Japanese rookie sensation Ichiro Suzuki, Rivera uncorked back-to-back wild pitches to plate a run. Bret Boone walked on a close 3-2 pitch, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Rivera retired Edgar Martinez on a slow roller to first to end the game. Martinez had been 9-for-11 against Rivera, who notched his 22nd career postseason save. O'Neill, who has been a staple in the middle of the Yankees' lineup over the last nine years, has been bothered by a stress fracture in his left foot. But with the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, O'Neill lined a 2-1 pitch from Seattle starter Aaron Sele (0-2) over the right-field wall for a three-run cushion. It was O'Neill's first postseason home run since Game Four of the 1998 ALCS against Cleveland. The Yankees have won four straight playoff games, three of those on the road. Seattle dropped Game One of the Division Series but rebounded to beat Cleveland in five games. The Mariners lost to the Yankees in the ALCS last year. |
