PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Mark Mulder struck out five and scattered eight hits over 5 1/2 effective innings as the Oakland Athletics posted a 3-1 Cactus league victory over the Seattle Mariners. Mulder, a 21-game winner last season, had his best outing of spring training, striking out five before being relieved by Jeff Tam. Tam allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings and new closer Billy Koch pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the exhibition season. Mulder got all the support he needed on Scott Hatteberg's three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Hatteberg has hit three homers in his last two games. Seattle starter Ryan Franklin (1-1) allowed three runs and eight hits in four innings. |
