SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- David Bell and Benito Santiago homered and Kurt Ainsworth had eight strikeouts over six innings as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Chicago Cubs, 5-3, in a Cactus League matchup of split squads. After Tsuyoshi Shinjo reached safely in the bottom of the first inning, Bell homered off Chicago starter Jason Bere. It was Bell's fifth homer of the spring. Santiago added a solo shot in the fourth off Bere, who allowed three runs and four hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked two. Derin McMains and Yorvit Torrealba drove in runs in the eighth to give Manny Aybar, who pitched a scoreless inning, the victory. Ainsworth surrendered three runs and six hits while walking two. Fred McGriff had a solo homer in the sixth inning for the Cubs. |
