TUCSON, Arizona (Ticker) -- Corey Patterson belted two homers and Roosevelt Brown supplied the go-ahead blast -- a three-run shot in the fifth inning -- as the Chicago Cubs edged the San Diego Padres, 10-9, in Cactus League play. After Brown's second homer of the spring gave the Cubs a 7-6 lead, they added a run in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth to nullify Phil Nevin's three-run blast in the final frame. Patterson smacked his third and fourth homers of the spring and drove in four runs and Chris Stynes added a solo shot for Chicago, which also got two hits from Delino DeShields. Nevin went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI and Sean Burroughs stroked three hits for the Padres, who supplied 15 of the game's 29 hits. Nevin, who has four homers and 21 RBI, upped his average to .226. Jon Lieber notched the win despite giving up six runs and 10 hits over six innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Loser Kevin Jarvis was tagged for seven runs and eight hits over five innings. |
