PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Brian Lawrence pitched six strong innings and Phil Nevin belted a two-run homer to lift the San Diego Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Lawrence won for the first time in three spring decisions, allowing one run and six hits. The righthander struck out five without a walk. Shifting to first base this season to accommodate highly touted rookie Sean Burroughs, Nevin smacked his sixth homer in the opening inning off Clint Nagoette. Trenidad Hubbard added an RBI single in the seventh for San Diego. Edgar Martinez delivered a run-scoring single in the sixth for Seattle. Nagoette gave up two runs and three hits in three innings. |
