Major League Exhibition Recap (Oakland-Chicago Cubs) Posted: Sun March 8, 1998 at 8:41 p.m. EST CHICAGO CUBS 9, OAKLAND 5Sammy Sosa belted a pair of two-run homers as the Chicago Cubs banged out 19 hits en route to a 9-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics in Mesa, Arizona. Henry Rodriguez, Tyler Houston and Mickey Morandini each had two hits for the Cubs, who opened a 7-2 lead after four innings. Oakland starter Kenny Rogers suffered his first loss of the spring, surrendering six runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Gil Heredia, Oakland's second pitcher, was tagged for three runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings. Damon Berryhill and Jason Giambi each had two hits and an RBI for the Athletics. Jeremi Gonzalez picked up the win, allowing two runs and five hits in four innings.
