The A's, under the Finley-puppet manager Alvin Dark, capped their turbulent three-year reign by winning the first all-California Series. Reliever Rollie Fingers, he of the twirly handlebar 'stache, figured in all four Oakland victories. With three saves and a win, Fingers was voted Series MVP by more than a hair. Soon after, Catfish Hunter became the first Oakland star to take flight as a free agent; many more would follow. The dynasty was over.
