A Winning Beginning

Terry Collins has never had a losing season as a major league manager. After guiding the Astros to a winning record in each of his three years there (1994-96), he led Anaheim to an 84-78 finish last season, earning a unique distinction among current major league skippers: He's the only one to start his managerial career with four straight winning seasons. Hall of Famer Joe McCarthy managed for 24 years in the big leagues, and his teams finished with a winning record in every one. But since 1950 only six managers have started their careers with a longer streak of plus-.500 seasons than Collins.
