Run Down?

In his five previous years with Cleveland (1992-96), Kenny Lofton averaged 65 stolen bases per year and was successful on 82% of his attempts. But with Atlanta last year his stolen-base percentage was the lowest among the 42 major leaguers who stole at least 20 bases. (Coincidentally, Lofton's replacement on the Indians, Marquis Grissom, also experienced a falloff from his 28-for-39 performance with the Braves in '96.) In 19 postseason games with Cleveland (in '95 and '96), Lofton stole 16 bases in 17 attempts; last year he stole only one base in three playoff attempts.
