In the third inning of a 13-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees allow 11 runs—the most scored against the club in one inning since a 12-run fourth by the Cleveland Indians on July 2, 1943. Sixteen Red Sox hitters batted against starter Pettitte (43 pitches) and reliever Darren Holmes (33) in the 42-minute frame.
    June 3
A crowd of 27,291 at Yankee Stadium witnesses Hernandez's major league debut, in which he allows five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in seven innings of a 7-1 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. El Duque's one miscue: serving up a home run to Fred McGriff in the fourth inning.
June 10
Tim Raines becomes the fourth player in major league history to nab 800 stolen bases, reaching the milestone in the eighth inning of a 6-2 win in Montreal, the city where he spent 10 seasons with the Expos. Only Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock and Ty Cobb have more career thefts.

Representatives of both sides confirm that shortstop Derek Jeter and singer Mariah Carey have ended their relationship. "They have decided to take a step back," Carey spokeswoman Cindy Berger tells the New York Post. "The media pressure got to them. The decision was mutual. The scrutiny was just too much, on both sides."
July 5
The Yankees reach the unofficial halfway point of the season with a 60-20 record following a 1-0 shutout of the Baltimore Orioles. Cone improves to 12-2 by scattering seven hits over eight innings before Mariano Rivera finishes up.
  July 11
Four Yankees represent the team as reserves at the All-Star Game: pitcher Wells, shortstop Jeter, third baseman Scott Brosius and outfielder Paul O'Neill. Williams was also selected but was replaced because of a strained right knee. O'Neill throws out Fernando Vina at the plate in the eighth inning to preserve the AL's 10-8 lead en route to a 13-8 victory. Wells starts for the AL and pitched two hitless innings.
April 4July 18
After more than a month on the disabled list with a strained right knee, Williams returns to action as the designated hitter and goes 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs in a 10-3 win over the Blue Jays. The Yankees went 21-10 without Williams, who was batting .353 when he went down.
  July 20-21
The Yankees and Detroit Tigers play the mother of all doubleheaders. Game 1 is a five-hour, 50-minute affair that the Tigers win 4-3 in the top of the 17th on a Joe Randa RBI single off Darren Holmes. Game 2, which starts at 10:32 p.m., lasts a mere 2:45, with the Yankees coming out on the top end of a 4-3 score.
July 24
The Yankees sign highly touted multi-sport star Drew Henson to a five-year contract with a $2 million signing bonus. The 18-year-old is the Yankees' third-round draft pick (97th overall) in the June free-agent draft and the national high school record-holder for home runs (70), RBIs (290), runs (259) and grand slams (10). This fall, Henson, a freshman quarterback, will exercise his option to play football for the University of Michigan.
  July 25
As part of Old-Timers Day, former pitcher Jim Bouton returns to Yankee Stadium for the first time since his playing career ended. The author of Ball Four had been declared persona non grata by the Yankees since the 1971 release of his tell-all book.
Aug. 11
With a 7-0 shutout of the Minnesota Twins, the Yankees improve to 86-29. These numbers are most significant to manager Joe Torre, since they even his career record at .500: 1,168 up, 1,168 down in his 17th season with his fourth big-league club (Mets, Braves, Cardinals, Yankees).
  Aug. 12
During an 11-2 win over the Twins, the Yankees set a major league record by taking a lead in their 41st consecutive game, breaking the mark of 40 set by the 1932 Yankees. The last game in which the Yankees didn't lead was a 2-1 loss to the Mets on June 28.
Aug. 14
With a 6-4 win over the Texas Rangers, the Yankees improve to a phenomenal 60 games over .500 (89-29). It's the first time the team has been this far above the break-even mark since the 1939 club finished the season 106-45.
  Aug. 26
The Yankees' losing streak reaches a season-high four games with a 6-4 loss to the Angels in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader, but in the nightcap New York rebounds to take a 7-6 win on Jeter's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Wells flirts with another perfect game, retiring the first 20 Athletics he faces before Jason Giambi lines a soft single into center field. The lefty would settle for a two-hit, 7-0 shutout, including a career-high 13 strikeouts.
  Sep. 4
The Yankees beat the White Sox 11-6 for victory number 100, setting an AL record in the process. New York reaches the century mark in its 138th contest, two games faster than the 1954 Indians. "Once the season is over, then we can look back on 100 wins but we can't lose our focus," Williams says. "We do know we're a great team but we still have a lot more to accomplish."
Sep.9
With a 7-5 win in Boston over their closest pursuers, the Yankees officially clinch the AL East title. "Everybody realizes you can't get overly excited with this," Torre says. "But we can take a day to enjoy it." The only team to clinch a division title earlier was the 1975 Cincinnati Reds, who did it on September 7.
  Sep.9
Late-season callup Shane Spencer bashes a grand slam in the sixth inning against Tampa Bay to spark a 5-2 victory, the team's 111th of the season, breaking the franchise record of 110 set by the 1927 Yankees and tying the 1954 Indians' American League mark. Spencer has 11 hits (five HRs, 14 RBIs) in his last 17 at-bats.

After complaining of stomach pains for a few months, tests verify that Strawberry has a cancerous growth in his colon. "It shakes you up. He's one of our leaders, a well-respected veteran who is part of the personality of our team," says Cone, who also played with Strawberry on the Mets in the late 1980s. "He symbolizes the resilience of our team, all that he's been through in his career and his life."

In the 12th inning of Game 2 of the League Championship Series, second baseman Knoblauch commits a memorable blunder by arguing with an umpire rather than chasing after first baseman Tino Martinez's errant toss, which had hit Travis Fryman in the back just as Fryman reached first base. Two runs scored while Knoblauch pointed and shouted, leading to a 4-1 Indians win. "I screwed up," Knoblauch would admit the next day, though observers were left to wonder whether Fryman should have been called out in the first place for travelling outside the base path.

The Yankees jump out to a 6-0 lead in Game 6 of the LCS and hold on for a 9-5 victory to clinch the pennant. Wells is named series MVP after winning Games 1 and 5. "This is for every guy on the team," he says. "This is wonderful. The guys are wonderful."

The Yankees take their place as one of the greatest teams of all time by completing a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres to win the World Series, raising their overall record to 125-50. Scott Brosius, who hit two home runs to win Game 3, is named Series MVP. "This is the most determined team I've been around," Torre says afterward. "I don't know if we have the best team of all time, but I do know that we have the best record. We have to take a back seat to no one in my lifetime."
