In the summer of 1998, Mark McGwire made an assault on baseball's record books
that brought scores of fans back to the game. The future Hall of Famer not only
eclipsed Roger Maris' single-season home run record of 61, he demolished it,
finishing the year with 70 round-trippers. The prolific St. Louis Cardinals
slugger has been hitting majestic blasts since the beginning of his career,
setting the single-season rookie home run record of 49 in 1987. If Big Mac
remains healthy and has a few more seasons in him, Hank Aaron's all-time record
of 755 home runs will be well within McGwire's reach.
