The summer of 1998 will not soon be forgotten by baseball fans. Sammy Sosa of
the Chicago Cubs, along with St. Louis Cardinals' slugger Mark McGwire, engaged
in an epic home run battle and rewrote the record books. While McGwire was
already known for his prowess at the plate, Sosa's emergence was unexpected and
explosive. Slammin' Sammy, who had averaged 34 home runs in the previous five
seasons, launched 66 homers in '98 and hasn't slowed down since -- hitting 63
and 50 dingers in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
CNNSI.com offers a comprehensive scrapbook of Sosa's career, including a
timeline and a selection of SI Flashbacks.
