SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Ian Kennedy created several bad habits early in spring training, and now he's struggling to correct them.
Torii Hunter homered for the second straight day and the Los Angeles Angels roughed up the Arizona Diamondbacks opening day starter in a 10-8 victory Wednesday.
"I was really pulling off my pitches that I need to stay on track with, especially my fastball," said Kennedy, who lasted 3 2-3 innings. "My fastball command isn't where it should be."
Kennedy, who came into the game with a 7.88 ERA, was pulled after walking opposing starter Jered Weaver to load the bases. It was the second straight poor showing for the 26-year-old right-hander.
After Kennedy set down the side in order in the first inning, Hunter homered to open the second, and Los Angeles scored two runs on four hits in the inning.
"I know that I was trying too hard," Kennedy said. "I need to ease off a little bit, and when I go about 90 percent, it's usually a pretty executed pitch. Sometime I try to go with too much effort."
The Angels added a run on two hits in the third and loaded the bases on two hits and a walk in the fourth. Los Angeles finished with 17 hits.
Weaver, who has been the opening day starter for the Angels two of the last three years, allowed three runs on three hits while striking out six and walking none in 4 1-3 innings, his longest outing of the spring.
"It was hot out there and for him to get into the fifth inning was important," manager Mike Scioscia said. "He got to his pitch count and got into the fifth inning where he needed to be."
Bobby Wilson had a three-run double for the Angels, and Bobby Abreu had two RBIs. Justin Upton and Juan Miranda each a hit two-run homer for Arizona, which lost its eighth straight.
NOTES: Angels LHP Scott Downs is sidelined after breaking his left big toe Sunday at home. A team spokesman said there is no timetable for his return, and he will be reexamined in two weeks. Arizona SS Stephen Drew left the game after the first inning due to midsection tightness. Diamondbacks LHP Mike Hampton worked out of bases-loaded jams in the fourth and fifth innings without allowing a run. Angels 1B Mark Trumbo was removed in the third inning due to a tight groin.
