The series opener between the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers was a classic pitchers' duel.
The middle game at U.S. Cellular Field doesn't seem like it will follow suit.
Batters could take the spotlight Saturday night, when the recently recalled Dylan Axelrod takes the ball for the White Sox against the Brewers' Randy Wolf , who is mired in a nine-start winless drought.
A matchup between Chicago's Chris Sale and Milwaukee's Zack Greinke on Friday had the potential of being a low-scoring affair, and it certainly lived up to that billing. Neither team scored until the 10th inning when Ricky Weeks hit a run-scoring single off reliever Jesse Crain to lift the Brewers to a 1-0 victory.
Milwaukee (33-37) won for the fifth time in seven games to pull within 5 1/2 of NL Central-leading Cincinnati, while the White Sox (36-34) have dropped seven of nine to fall 1 1/2 games back of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.
The Brewers finally pulled out a close win after their lost five losses each came by one run, thanks to a dominant pitching performance and a clutch hit. Greinke ended up allowing three hits and a walk in nine innings, while Sale gave up four hits and a walk in eight.
"You're looking at two pitchers that were ... just moving it in and out, back and forth," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "I think both of them were doing that all night. It's not just one pitch that they have."While the starting pitchers were the story Friday, Ryan Braun , Corey Hart , Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko , who were a combined 1 for 14 with two walks in the opener, could have more of an impact Saturday.
Axelrod (0-1, 3.52 ERA) was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday to take the place of demoted reliever Zach Stewart . He'll make his first appearance, though, in the rotation for Philip Humber , who was placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to Friday's game because of a right elbow flexor strain.
Axelrod, who made his major league debut last season, appeared in three games for the White Sox earlier this year. In his lone start in Detroit on May 6, he allowed two runs on a pair of solo homers in 4 1-3 innings of a 3-1 loss.
"It's an opportunity for me to do what I've done and prove myself for a little bit of an extended time," said Axelrod, who was 5-4 with a 3.18 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 68 innings for the Knights.
Wolf (2-5, 5.11) hasn't won since April 30, but the winless stretch isn't entirely his fault.
In each of his last three starts and in four of his last five, he left with a lead only to have the Milwaukee bullpen fail to hold it. Against Toronto on Monday, Wolf exited with one out in the seventh with a 6-3 lead, but later in the inning Kameron Loe served up a game-tying three-run homer. At least the Brewers were able to rally for a 7-6 win, just their third victory during Wolf's winless drought.
Wolf, who hasn't won since beating San Diego on April 30, hasn't gone 10 consecutive starts without a victory since his rookie season of 1999.
This will be his first start against the White Sox since 2009, when he allowed five runs and three homers in 3 1-2 innings of a 10-7 loss for the Los Angeles Dodgers .

CHICAGO (AP) -- A day after their bats were silenced, the Chicago White Sox bounced back on Saturday night.
Dayan Viciedo homered and drove in four runs, Alex Rios delivered a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, and the White Sox rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6.
The White Sox knocked out 14 hits after mustering just three in a 10-inning, 1-0 loss Friday night.
"It's a confidence boost for the offense," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "You can sit there and hang your head and not do anything about it, but they have the ability to take it day by day and not let yesterday affect today. It's a credit to these guys."
With the game tied 6-6, Gordon Beckham led off the seventh with a single and stole second. After an intentional walk to Paul Konerko , Rios put Chicago ahead for good.
Addison Reed got Corey Hart to ground into a force out to leave the bases loaded in the eighth and pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in 10 chances. The Brewers stranded 10 runners.
Viciedo, who entered 7-for-53 (.132) with one extra-base hit and one multi-hit game in June, had three hits including a two-run homer that gave the White Sox a 4-2 lead in the fourth.
"It feels great," Viciedo said through an interpreter. "It's been a really tough month, but as far as that affecting my confidence it's just one of those things you got to keep going at it, keep practicing, and it will turn around."
Jesse Crain (2-1) earned the win. Jose Veras took the loss (3-3).
The Brewers built a 6-4 lead in the sixth, batting around and scoring three times. Aramis Ramirez led off with a single, and Will Ohman relieved Dylan Axelrod after the White Sox starter hit Rickie Weeks with a pitch. Pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado singled home the tying run, Cody Ransom singled in the go-ahead run, and Carlos Gomez capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
The White Sox tied it in the bottom of the inning. Rios led off with a single, stole second and scored on Viciedo's RBI single. Orlando Hudson knocked in Viciedo with a two-out double.
Rios finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Axelrod was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday and made his second start of the season in place of Philip Humber (right elbow strain), who went on the 15-day disabled list. He allowed five runs - four earned - in 5 1-3 innings.
"I hadn't pitched in nine days so it was good to get back out there," Axelrod said. "The offense picked me up at the end there."
The Brewers opened the scoring in the second on a defensive miscue. George Kottaras doubled down the left field line, and Viciedo misplayed the carom in the corner, allowing Aramis Ramirez to score from first.
Chicago responded in the bottom half with back-to-back RBI singles from Viciedo and Alexei Ramirez to take a 2-1 lead.
Milwaukee tied it in the third on an RBI single by Ryan Braun . The hit extended Braun's overall hitting streak to 17 games and his interleague streak to 27.
Beckham had three hits, including an RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Aramis Ramirez singled twice and scored twice, extending his hitting streak to seven.
Leadoff man Norichika Aoki had three hits, scored twice, and tied a Brewers franchise record with four stolen bases.
"I think that's a big part of my game, being aggressive on the bases and going after the next base," Aoki said through an interpreter.
After a red-hot May, in which the White Sox tied a franchise record with 18 wins, they are 8-12 in June.
NOTES: Braun served as the designated hitter for the second time this season and fifth in his career. ... Before the game, Milwaukee placed Shaun Marcum on the 15-day disabled list because of elbow soreness and activated Travis Ishikawa (oblique strain). ... White Sox OF and leadoff hitter Alejandro De Aza had the day off. ... The Brewers and White Sox will complete their three-game series on Sunday with Michael Fiers (2-2, 3.46) opposing Jose Quintana (2-1, 1.53).
