It's not often a starting pitcher can lead his team to two victories in one series, but that's exactly what St. Louis Cardinals rookie Joe Kelly has the chance to achieve.
Kelly will take the ball in Wednesday night's finale looking to help the Cardinals extend their longest winning streak of the season to six and continue their dominance over the sputtering Miami Marlins .
Kelly (1-0, 3.52 ERA) wasn't expected to see the field in Monday's opener in Miami, but with two outs and the bases loaded in the 10th inning and the Cardinals up by a run, he was called on to hit for reliever Victor Marte . He delivered a run-scoring single that proved to be the game winning RBI and St. Louis (40-35) hung on for an 8-7 win.
The Cardinals won 5-2 the next night for their fifth straight victory, and will turn to Kelly to complete the sweep.
The 24-year-old right-hander was on the mound when the winning streak began Friday in Kansas City, allowing three runs and nine hits over a season-high six innings in an 11-4 win to pick up his first major league victory in his third career start.
While Kelly is trying to lift the Cardinals to another win over the Marlins, his batterymate has already left his mark on the first two games.
After hitting a two-out, two-run game-tying homer in the ninth inning Monday, Yadier Molina hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat Tuesday to cap St. Louis' five-run first inning. Molina, who has homered in three straight games, leads NL catchers in nearly every offensive category with 12 homers, 44 RBIs and a .317 average.
"I'm just trying to hit the ball, that's it," said the three-time All-Star, who is two homers shy of his career best set last year. "Seeing the ball and trying to hit the ball. It's that simple."The Cardinals have scored 43 runs during the winning streak, and are trying to win six straight for the first time since reeling off eight in a row from July 11-21, 2010.
The Marlins (34-40) are heading in the opposite direction. They've lost eight of nine and are a major league-worst 3-17 since June 5. Miami, 2-12 in its new ballpark this month, has also lost eight straight to St. Louis with the last seven coming in Florida.
"It's another loss," Ozzie Guillen told the Marlins' official website. "At the end of the day, all that really matters is winning."
While most of Miami's troubles have been confined to this month following a record-setting May, the team has struggled behind Anibal Sanchez (3-6, 3.94) for weeks, losing seven of his last nine starts.
Since shutting down Washington in a 3-1 win on May 29, Sanchez is 0-3 with an 8.06 ERA in his four June starts. Against Toronto on Friday, he was tagged for six runs, seven hits and four walks in a season-worst 3 1-3 innings of a 12-5 loss.
Sanchez was 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA in two starts against the Cardinals last season, with Matt Holliday going 3 for 6 with a pair of homers. Yadier Molina is 3 for 9 with a home run lifetime against the right-hander.
Holliday was 0 for 3 with two walks Tuesday after hitting .556 with two homers, seven doubles and 12 RBIs in his previous nine games.
Giancarlo Stanton had two of Miami's five hits Tuesday, including his 17th homer.

MIAMI (AP) -- It took a few minutes, but the umpires' verdict was worth the wait for the Miami Marlins .
John Buck and pinch hitter Logan Morrison connected for consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, rallying the Marlins past St. Louis 5-3 Wednesday night and ending their eight-game losing streak against the Cardinals.
Buck tied it with one out when he homered off Fernando Salas . Morrison then sent a drive off Sam Freeman (0-1) that hit the top of the right-field fence, bounced off a nearby railing and dropped back into play.
"I thought it hit the back of the concrete and went out, I didn't even know it came back onto the field," Morrison said.
After being stopped at second base while the umpires reviewed the play, Morrison was allowed to finish his home-run trot. It was Morrison's first career pinch-hit home run.
"Thank God we had instant replay because if not that would have been double," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "It also helps the umpires. I don't think it killed anybody in baseball for that idea. It helped the game."
The Cardinals had won five in a row overall. Miami won for just the second time in 10 games.
"Any time you beat the Cardinals, it's a good win especially when they're playing that well," Buck said. "Hopefully it can be momentum we can build on and start our own little stretch here."
Tony Cruz 's first career homer in the top of the seventh put the Cardinals ahead 3-2.
"I was just looking for a good pitch to hit and I got it," Cruz said. "Thankfully, it went out. It's a great feeling. I had a lot of family here tonight. They knew I was playing. I thank Mike (manager Matheny) for giving me the opportunity of letting me play in front of my family. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win, though."
Buck has seven home runs this season, including three in his last six games. This was the second time the Marlins have hit back-to-back home runs this season - Justin Ruggiano and Morrison accomplished the feat on June 1 at Philadelphia.
"Any time Buck is at the plate we know he has a chance to hit the ball out of the ballpark," Guillen said. "We need that from him."
Omar Infante 's RBI double in the eighth gave the Marlins an insurance run.
Anibal Sanchez (4-6) ended his three-game losing streak, allowing three runs in seven innings.
"We have a great team so if we keep playing like that we can start winning a lot of games," Sanchez said.
Steve Cishek pitched the eighth and Heath Bell recorded his 15th save in 19 chances by pitching the ninth. He got Allen Craig to pop up with Matt Carpenter on second to end the game.
"Five consecutive wins is always a positive," Matheny said. "Guys are always going to remember that. That was a good run."
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Beltran and an RBI double by David Freese .
The Marlins tied it at 2 in the fifth against Joe Kelly on an RBI single by Buck and a groundout by Jose Reyes .
NOTES: Cruz, a 25-year-old backup catcher, homered in his 117th career at-bat. ... Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is hoping his team can duplicate the Miami Heat's success in capturing a championship. "Having the Miami Heat winning, to me, was an inspiration," Guillen said. "I hope for the players, too. When I saw those guys in the parade talking, I got jealous. I want to be them. I wish I was the coach. That's my inspiration for the rest of my career here in Miami." ... Both teams will have the day off on Thursday before St. Louis hosts Pittsburgh, with RHP Adam Wainwright (6-7, 4.32 ERA) opposing RHP Kevin Correia (3-6, 4.03 ERA). The Marlins will host Philadelphia and will start LHP Mark Buehrle (6-8, 3.55 ERA) on Friday.
