Mark Buehrle spent the last 12 years as the most consistent - and often the best - pitcher in Chicago.
In a new league and a new city, his performances have been similar with the Miami Marlins in 2012.
Buehrle will make his return to the Windy City as he attempts to win his fifth straight start Thursday against the Chicago Cubs .
Buehrle (9-8, 3.13 ERA) joined Miami in the offseason via free agency, leaving behind an impressive legacy in Chicago.
The left-hander helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series, also tossing a perfect game in 2009 and a no-hitter two years earlier. Buehrle's 161 wins for the South Side club were the most by any pitcher in Chicago since 2000, besting Carlos Zambrano 's 125 with the Cubs.
The former crosstown rivals are now teammates with the Marlins. Zambrano's turn in the rotation didn't come up in this series, which is also Miami manager Ozzie Guillen 's first in the city since leaving the White Sox.
Buehrle, who has a chance to keep pace with CC Sabathia by reaching double digits in wins for the 12th consecutive year, said he'll be prepared for boos.
"I wouldn't see any reason for (the Wrigley Field crowd) to cheer me, being on the opposite side the whole time," Buehrle told the Marlins' official website.
He'll try to help the Marlins take two of three after they fell 5-1 Wednesday in a game that was called in the eighth inning due to rain. Miami won the series opener 9-5.
Buehrle, Miami's leader in wins and ERA among starters, has posted a 0.94 ERA while winning his last four starts. He has 29 strikeouts over 28 2-3 innings in that stretch, well above his typical rate.
"I'm still scratching my own head to try to figure out what I'm doing striking all these guys out," Buehrle said Saturday after beating Washington 2-1.
He's also 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last five starts against the Cubs (37-53). He was outstanding against them April 18 in Miami, yielding one run in eight innings of a 9-1 victory.
The Marlins (44-47) would love to give him that kind of support again after stranding 11 runners Wednesday and going 0 for 8 with men in scoring position. Their .227 average this season in those situations ranks 29th in the majors.
"That's what we doing the best: leaving people on base," Guillen said. "Every time we play good it's because we drive those guys (in). We take advantage. When we don't, we have the result we have (Wednesday)."
Emilio Bonifacio was a homer shy of the cycle Wednesday but had no runs or RBIs. He has a .417 average in his last nine meetings with Chicago and he's 3 for 7 versus Paul Maholm , the Cubs' scheduled starter Thursday.
Maholm (7-6, 4.33) is trying to win four starts in a row for the second time this year. The left-hander accomplished the feat behind a 1.07 ERA from April 21-May 9.
He has a 0.81 ERA over his last four appearances - one in relief. Maholm was outstanding again Friday, yielding one run and scattering six hits over seven innings of an 8-1 win over Arizona.
"I made some good pitches, got the ground balls or easier pop-ups and the defense made some great plays," Maholm told the Cubs' official website. "For me, it's getting ahead, keeping the ball down and mixing speeds and not trying to do a whole lot."
Maholm has lost his last two starts versus the Marlins, getting tagged for 10 runs and 15 hits with five walks and two hit batters over 9 1-3 innings while with Pittsburgh.
Chicago has won 13 of 18 overall, including nine of 11 at home.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Paul Maholm welcomed Mark Buehrle back to Chicago with a spot-on impersonation of his fellow veteran left-hander.
Maholm pitched eight innings, Alfonso Soriano homered and the Cubs beat Buehrle and the Miami Marlins 4-2 Thursday to complete a solid 5-1 homestand.
"With Buehrle, you watch him over his career. You work fast, you mix speeds, you keep the ball down, you put your defense to work and they make plays," Maholm said. "I'm all about trying to get it over with quick."
Maholm (8-6) allowed one run and four hits to win his fourth consecutive start, matching a career best. Including his first career relief appearance July 8 against the Mets, the lefty has allowed just three runs in his last 30 1-3 innings for a sparkling 0.89 ERA over his last five games.
"He stayed strong today. He kept it going the whole time," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said.
Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs delivered an RBI single in the ninth before Carlos Marmol finished the five-hitter for his 11th save in 13 chances, sending Chicago to its 14th win in 19 games. The Cubs took two of three in the series to improve to 10-4 in July.
Buehrle was back in the Windy City for the first time since he left the White Sox for a $58 million, four-year contract with Miami, where he was reunited with manager Ozzie Guillen . The left-hander won 161 games in 12 seasons in Chicago and was greeted with mostly cheers when he batted for the first time in the third inning.
Buehrle's big free-agent deal was part of a major offseason overhaul for the Marlins, who also signed shortstop Jose Reyes and closer Heath Bell . While Reyes and Bell have underperformed, Buehrle (9-9) has been the most dependable member of Miami's rotation. He leads the team in wins and innings, and has one of the club's two complete games this season.
Reyes' difficult season continued Thursday when he was robbed of a pair of hits in the series finale. Shortstop Starlin Castro made a leaping grab of his liner in the sixth and Reed Johnson had a terrific diving catch in right-center in the eighth.
"I just kind of put my head down at first and took a few steps and fortunately the wind was kind of blowing across back towards me," said Johnson, who received a long ovation from the Wrigley Field crowd of 32,741 after the impressive grab. "So it kind of checked the ball up a little bit and gave me time to run underneath it."
Buehrle and Maholm were in a scoreless pitchers' duel before Soriano hit a leadoff drive into the left-field basket in the fifth for his 18th homer, bolstering his credentials ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadlines. The slugger batted .391 (9 for 23) with three homers and six RBIs during the homestand.
Soriano's laser-like shot seemed to spark the Cubs' lineup. The next three batters reached to load the bases, and Luis Valbuena hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Maholm struck out for the second out, but Johnson followed with a liner into left field to give Chicago a 4-0 advantage.
"It seemed like I had nothing working," Buehrle said. "Changeup, couldn't throw that for a strike. I think I threw one good one the whole day."
That was more than enough for Maholm, who allowed the leadoff hitter to reach in each of the first three innings but escaped unscathed each time.
"He was staying on the corners," said Marlins left fielder Austin Kearns , who went 0 for 2. "He's a little deceptive. He did a good job."
Pinch-hitter Donovan Solano tripled and scored on Emilio Bonifacio 's grounder in the sixth for Miami's first run.
NOTES: The Cubs acquired RHP Justin Germano from the Red Sox for cash. Boston designated Germano for assignment last Friday. The Cubs cut RHP Jairo Asencio to make room on the roster. ... Soriano became the 13th player to hit at least 150 home runs for the Cubs. ... RHP Ryan Dempster is scheduled to start for the Cubs when they open a three-game series at St. Louis on Friday night. Dempster (5-3), who is working on a 33-inning scoreless streak and a major league-best 1.86 ERA, is expected to be traded before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, but said before Thursday's game he didn't know of any imminent deals. "I'm sure if they have something they'll come to me," said Dempster, who can veto any trade. "But right now I'm just worried about trying to get ready for tomorrow's game." Kyle Lohse (9-2, 2.80 ERA) will start for the Cardinals. ... Miami travels to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates. RHP Ricky Nolasco (8-7, 4.47 ERA) and Pirates RHP Kevin Correia (6-6, 4.25 ERA) are slated to meet in Friday night's series opener. ... Miami RF Justin Ruggiano went 2 for 4 and is batting .354 (17 for 48) in July.
