The Kansas City Royals are the worst home team in baseball, and their rotation hasn't been much help.
Luke Hochevar has been a rare bright spot recently.
Hochevar will try to continue his productive stretch as the Royals open a three-game set with the last-place Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
Kansas City is 16-28 at home, losing four of five there while the rotation has posted a 9.41 ERA. The starters were routinely pounded this week while dropping three of four to Seattle behind a 12.89 ERA.
"It's more frustrating than deflating," manager Ned Yost told the team's official website after Thursday's 6-1 loss. "We're not pitching well right now. The guys are out giving it their best effort, but we've got to find a way to get back on track."
The Royals' ERA from the rotation is 5.43, ranking only better than the Twins' 5.74.
Hochevar (6-8, 5.16 ERA), though, is 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in his last five starts. He's 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in his last three outings at home after going 0-4 with an 8.59 ERA in his first six starts at Kauffman Stadium.
The right-hander is 2-1 with a 4.81 ERA in his last four home starts against Minnesota and struggled against the AL Central rival on the road June 30. Hochevar surrendered five runs and eight hits, including a season-high three homers, in six innings of a 5-1 loss.
Kansas City (39-52) was swept in that three-game series, and it's 3-6 in the last nine at home versus the Twins (38-54).
Minnesota has dropped nine of 12, and like the Royals, the rotation continues to be a major problem. It's compiled a 6.51 ERA over the last seven games, and the season mark by the starters is the club's highest since a franchise-record 6.11 ERA in the 1995 strike-shortened season.
The Twins are hoping Nick Blackburn (4-5, 8.10) can help them get on track after returning from a stint in the minors, but his ERA is almost two runs higher than any other pitcher with at least 63 innings.
"We need him desperately," manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Blackburn went 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in four starts for Triple-A Rochester, winning his last two in impressive fashion. The veteran right-hander tossed a nine-hitter July 8 and yielded one earned run in seven innings Saturday.
"I went down there and got to pitch seven or eight innings each time out. It was a great feeling to do that," Blackburn said. "I don't care what level you're at, when you haven't done that all year, to go get that done was a big accomplishment and confidence booster."
Blackburn was battered in his last two starts for the Twins, going 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA while surrendering 17 hits - four homers - in nine innings. However, facing the Royals may help him rebound since he's 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA in his last three starts against them.
Josh Willingham is 11 for 24 with four home runs and seven RBIs in the past seven games, and he's 10 for 30 with three homers while driving in 11 runs in eight 2012 meetings with Kansas City.
Willingham's lone hit in nine at-bats against Hochevar is a home run.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Nick Blackburn didn't get the win Friday night. Still, the Minnesota Twins right-hander needed a solid start like this.
Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 and scored the winning run in the 11th inning to lead the Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals .
Mauer, a career .359 hitter at Kauffman Stadium, led off the 11th with a double off Jonathan Broxton (1-2) and he scored on Josh Willingham 's groundball single to right.
Casey Fien (1-0) worked two perfect innings to pick up his first major-league victory. Glen Perkins worked around Alcides Escobar 's leadoff double in the bottom of the inning to pick up his fifth save in eight opportunities.
Blackburn, who was just recalled from Triple-A Rochester, held the Royals to one run and seven hits over 6 2-3 innings, while walking none and striking out two.
"I just finally put it all together," Blackburn said. "I was missing a lot of spots, but with movement as opposed to just floating it in there. One mistake hurt me tonight. Other than that I was pretty pleased with it."
Blackburn was demoted to the minors July 4 after going 4-5 with an 8.10 ERA in 13 starts and allowing 90 hits in 63 1-3 innings. After going 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in two International League starts, he was recalled and replaced Brian Duensing , who was sent back to the bullpen after going 0-4 with a 10.13 ERA in four starts.
"That was a great performance," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It was desperately needed by him, for him. He made it look effortless.
"It's something he's been working on. He said he was going to stay light on his front side and let the ball come out of his hand. He did it with all of his pitches - good changeup, good sinker and a good slider."
Blackburn did not reach a three-ball count on any of the 27 batters he faced.
"For the most part, I kept the ball on the ground and there wasn't a whole lot of great contact," Blackburn said. "I felt the movement was keeping guys off balance. It's definitely confidence boosting."
Greg Holland , the third Kansas City pitcher, worked out of a 10th-inning jam, which Nick Mastroianni led off with a triple to right.
Holland stranded him by retiring Alexi Casilla on a grounder with the infield in, then struck out Ben Revere and Jamey Carroll . Holland struck out four in two innings.
Gardenhire said he was "disappointed" the Twins failed to get a run in the 10th, but run producers Mauer and Willingham came through in the 11th.
"It came down to the bullpens and a couple of big hits," Gardenhire said. "It starts off with Joe and Willie knocks him in. It's a couple of huge hits."
Luke Hochevar , the first overall pick in the 2006 draft, retired the last 10 batters he faced, and allowed five hits, all with two outs, in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none, throwing 67
strikes in 109 pitches.
"I'm just really encouraged with how he threw the ball," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was mixing his curve and got a couple of outs with his slider, and he located his fastball well."
Hochevar is 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA in his past seven starts.
Mastroianni homered in the second inning on a 3-1 pitch, the only run Hochevar allowed.
Yuniesky Betancourt 's two-out double to left in the seventh scored Eric Hosmer , who led off the inning with a single, for the only run off Blackburn.
Twins reliever Jared Burton , who worked a scoreless eighth, has not allowed a run in his past 14 appearances, covering 14 2-3 innings.
Notes: The Royals have lost 14 of their past 18 games. .RHP Jeremy Guthrie , who was 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA in 19 games with Colorado, was acquired in a trade for LHP Jonathan Sanchez and will start Sunday for the Royals. LHP Everett Teaford , who was slated to start Sunday, will go to the bullpen as a long man. .Minnesota 3B Trevor Plouffe left with a bruised right thumb and is listed as day-to-day. Brian Dozier struck out as a pinch-hitter for Plouffe in the ninth inning. .Twins starters went 1-4 with a 6.51 ERA in their 2-5 homestand that ended Thursday. .LHP Scott Diamond , who won his only career start against the Royals, will start Saturday for the Twins. The Royals will counter with RHP Luis Mendoza , who has five quality starts in his past six outings.
