A season-ending injury to Colby Lewis has intensified rumors the Texas Rangers may make a major trade to bolster their banged-up rotation.
For now, they'll turn to 21-year-old Martin Perez to fill Lewis' spot Tuesday night when the Rangers continue their three-game series with the sputtering Boston Red Sox.
Lewis started on opening day, and he ranks second among Texas starters with a 3.43 ERA in 16 outings, 15 of which came before a recent stint on the disabled list with what was announced as forearm tendinitis.
The right-hander returned Wednesday at Oakland and was effective for five innings, but his arm tightened up again and further examination showed a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He'll have surgery later this week and is expected to miss at least nine months.
General manager Jon Daniels called it "a blow for us, but it's something we're going to recover from."
"It's an opportunity for someone to step up," he said. "I feel bad for Colby, he's been a warrior. He's pitched a ton of innings and he's been such a leader by example."
Assuming Texas (57-38) gets back to the playoffs, that may be when Lewis is missed most. He was 4-1 with a 2.34 ERA in eight postseason starts as the Rangers won back-to-back AL titles.
Perez (1-1, 5.54 ERA) has split his only two major league starts, posting a 3.18 ERA in place of Lewis earlier this season.
"The guy has proved he can pitch here, so we didn't hesitate to bring him back," manager Ron Washington said.
The left-hander may not be in the rotation for long, though. Daniels admitted the Rangers are investigating a trade market that may include a number of big-name starters.
"We've had guys out there looking and had conversations with clubs," Daniels said.
Another in-house injury replacement helped the Rangers win the series opener 9-1. With Roy Oswalt sidelined due to back stiffness, Scott Feldman held down Boston's lineup as the Red Sox lost a fourth straight game Monday.
Having allowed 37 runs during its skid, Boston (48-49) certainly has no sympathy for Texas' pitching woes. For the season, Red Sox starters rank 27th in the majors with a 4.89 ERA.
"Good pitching and timely hitting," manager Bobby Valentine said. "We're due for it."
The Rangers have taken full advantage, scoring 33 runs in winning all three 2012 meetings. Mike Napoli has four homers and 10 RBIs in those contests, giving him 15 homers in 28 games versus Boston since 2008.
Clay Buchholz (8-3, 5.19) has been a rare bright spot for the Red Sox lately, and he'll try to build on Thursday's strong outing against the Chicago White Sox. He allowed one run in eight innings before Cody Ross ' three-run homer in the ninth gave Boston a 3-1 win.
The right-hander got off to a rocky start this season but has gone at least six innings in each of his last seven starts around a stint on the DL with esophagitis. He's 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA in that stretch.
"I feel pretty confident in most all of my pitches each time I go out," Buchholz told the Red Sox's official website.
He may not, however, be quite as sure of himself against the Rangers, who've beaten Buchholz the last three times they've faced him. Texas took him deep four times - Napoli once - in a 5-1 win in Arlington in the most recent matchup April 3, 2011.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- With his team riding a four-game losing streak, Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was looking for more than just timely hits from his team. He also wanted to see his players draw walks.
The Red Sox did both at just the right time on Tuesday night, beating the Texas Rangers 2-1 to end their skid.
Daniel Nava and pinch hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia drew consecutive two-out walks in the ninth inning from Rangers closer Joe Nathan , then Mike Aviles blooped a tiebreaking single.
"We got some long-awaited walks," Valentine said. "They were two great at-bats by Nava and Salty. Then Mike has been hitting in bad luck, but he got a hit on 3-and-2 off the end of his bat. A couple of walks and a bloop, and we win."
Nathan (1-3) had issued only five walks in 38 1-3 innings pitched this season before facing Nava and Saltalamacchia. Those consecutive walks also snapped a career-long stretch of 80 straight appearances with one or fewer walks.
With Nava and Saltalamacchia on, Aviles singled just beyond the reach of shortstop Elvis Andrus . It was Aviles' first career go-ahead hit in the ninth inning or later.
"(Nathan) put it in the strike zone and got two quick outs, then all of a sudden he couldn't find the strike zone," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Give Aviles credit, he got a good pitch, poked it over the infield and we just couldn't get to it."
The Rangers had a prime scoring opportunity in the eighth inning but Red Sox reliever Vicente Padilla (4-0) escaped a first-and-third jam.
Andrus beat out a single and made it to third on an unusual two-base throwing error by Padilla.
Padilla threw to first in an attempt to pick off Andrus, got the return throw from first baseman Adrian Gonzalez , then almost immediately threw back to Gonzalez, who wasn't expecting it and the ball rolled to the wall.
With two outs, Padilla hit Adrian Beltre , knocking his helmet off and sending him to the ground. Rangers officials said after the game that Beltre did not sustain a concussion but had a head contusion. After Beltre left the game, Michael Young grounded out to end the inning.
"It was a nail-biter game - any one mistake can hurt you," Young said.
Cody Ross scored for Boston in the fourth when he walked and Kelly Shoppach doubled on a drive that right fielder David Murphy misplayed at the warning track.
The Rangers had a player hit a double for the third consecutive inning in the sixth when Andrus doubled with one out. Andrus went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a slow groundout by Josh Hamilton .
Boston starter Clay Buchholz gave up only four hits in seven innings. Alfredo Aceves notched his 21st save of the season.
"Four losses (in a row) was big," Nava said. "This was another win that we need."
Martin Perez , called up from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday after starter Colby Lewis was put on the disabled list for season-ending surgery, pitched six innings, giving up five hits.
NOTES: Rangers pitcher Neftali Feliz , put on the 60-day DL on May 21 because of inflammation in his right elbow, started Tuesday for Round Rock against Albuquerque. Feliz threw three innings, giving up one hit and no runs while walking one and striking out three. He is expected to make one more start for Round Rock before returning to the Rangers. ... Boston LF Carl Crawford was moved down to seventh in the batting order for the game, a move manager Bobby Valentine made since Crawford had only had 14 at-bats against left-handers this season. Crawford, who spent the first 3 1/2 months of the season on the DL following surgery on his left wrist, batted second his first seven games. Crawford went 0 for 3 with a strikeout and was replaced by Nava in the bottom of the seventh.
