Manny Machado isn't taking long to settle into the big leagues and make an impact on the Baltimore Orioles .
After homering twice in just his second game, Machado has given himself a tough act to follow Saturday night when he and the Orioles continue their series against the Kansas City Royals .
Baltimore purchased the contract of Machado, the third overall pick in the 2010 draft, Thursday. He went 2 for 4 with a triple in his debut against Kansas City later that night.
His second game was even more impressive, as the 20-year-old infielder became the youngest player in Orioles history to homer twice in a game - a solo shot in the fifth inning and a three-run blast in the sixth - and led Baltimore to a 7-1 win.
"It's two games. He's off to a good start," manager Buck Showalter said. "He's hit some mistakes and hit them well, which guys have to do up here. He'll have the kitchen sink thrown at him and we'll see how it goes. But so far, so good."
Machado's four RBIs provided more than enough support for rookie starter Miguel Gonzalez , who went eight innings while giving up a solo homer to Salvador Perez . Baltimore has won six of seven and currently holds one of the AL's two wild-card spots.
While Machado has made a quick impact on the Orioles (61-52), it has taken a little longer for Chris Tillman (5-1, 2.38 ERA) to provide results.
Tillman, in his fourth season with the Orioles, had won seven games his previous three years combined but has now won four consecutive starts. He took a shutout into the eighth inning against Seattle on Monday before giving up one run in a 3-1 victory.
"It feels good," Tillman said. "I feel like I put a lot of work in in the offseason and carried it into the season and spring training and what not. I feel like it's starting to pay off here."Tillman is 0-1 in two career starts against the Royals, giving up 11 runs and 17 hits over 8 1-3 innings.
Friday's loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Kansas City (48-64). The top four in its lineup went hitless with six strikeouts. Billy Butler went 0 for 4 after recording three hits - all for extra bases - on Thursday.
Kansas City will hand the ball to Luis Mendoza (5-8, 4.36), who has posted a 5.40 ERA while losing his last three road starts. The right-hander gave up four runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 7 1-3 innings of a 4-2 loss at Chicago on Monday.
Mendoza hasn't started against the Orioles since 2008, when he surrendered five runs and six hits in three innings of a 9-1 loss while with Texas.

BALTIMORE (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals , and Alex Gordon in particular, showed their late-night prowess on a dreary night at Camden Yards.
Gordon hit two of Kansas City's four home runs, Luis Mendoza took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 Saturday night after the start of the game was delayed by rain for more than three hours.
Salvador Perez and Billy Butler also connected for the Royals, who have 14 homers in their last seven games. Gordon has nine home runs this season, three in this four-game series that concludes Sunday afternoon.
The game started at 10:14 p.m. and spilled into Sunday morning, finally ending at 1:13 a.m.
"Same ballpark, same rain delay, same weather conditions," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "They did a better job with it than we did."
Especially Gordon, who homered in the first inning and again in the seventh, taking advantage of the short distance to left field on both occasions.
Asked to explain his power surge, Gordon said, "Probably the park a little bit. Take advantage of the places you play and the conditions you play under."
Mendoza (6-8) gave up three runs and seven hits over six-plus innings in his first appearance against the Orioles since 2008. Two of his 12 career wins have come against Baltimore.
Chris Tillman (5-2) allowed six runs and six hits, including three homers, in 5 2-3 innings.
Both pitchers were thrown off their usual pattern because of the delay, but Tillman was the only one who struggled.
"It's a challenge. Their guy did a good job with it," Showalter said. "We had two or three times it looked like we were going to be able to start. Then a bunch of cells keep popping up. It's hard to predict, being this close to the (Chesapeake) Bay. It's nobody's fault. I feel bad for the fans that toughed it out that we weren't able to play a bit better."
The Royals had no desire to play a doubleheader on Sunday or stay through Monday for a makeup game, so they were delighted when the game finally got under way.
"We needed to play," manager Ned Yost said. "We have a mutual off day on Monday but we have a charity golf tournament a lot of the players need to be at, so we couldn't stay. We wanted to do everything we could to get this in."
Coming in, Tillman yielded only two home runs in 34 innings this season. In his only previous start against the Royals, in July 2009, the right-hander also surrendered three home runs.
Playing in his third major league game, Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. It was another solid outing for the 20-year-old, the first player in modern baseball history (since 1900) to have two homers and a triple in his first two games, according to information provided to the Orioles by the Elias Sports Bureau.
Adam Jones had two hits for the Orioles, who lost for the second time in eight games.
After a delay of 3 hours, 9 minutes, Gordon hit Tillman's third pitch into the left-field seats. It was Gordon's fourth leadoff homer of the season, the second in this series.
Lorenzo Cain led off the second inning with a single and Perez followed with his eighth home run, the second in two nights.
Butler homered on a 3-0 pitch in the third to make it 4-0. Butler's career-high 24 home runs are the most by a Royal since Carlos Beltran hit 26 in 2003.
Kansas City got two runs in the sixth. After Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single, Jeff Francoeur was credited with stealing home when Orioles catcher Matt Wieters threw wildly trying to get Hosmer at second on a double-steal.
Gordon homered off Miguel Socolovich leading off the seventh. Gordon's only previous two-homer game was against Minnesota in 2007.
Baltimore chased Mendoza in the bottom half. Following a walk and a single, Machado bounced a double inside the third base line before Omar Quintanilla singled in two runs. But with runners at second and third and two outs, Jones grounded out.
NOTES: The Orioles unveiled a statue of slugger Eddie Murray in the picnic area beyond the bullpen area in center field. Murray is the fourth of six Orioles Hall of Fame stars to be honored with a sculpture during the 20th anniversary of Camden Yards. Statues of Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer , Frank Robinson and Murray have already been put in place, and those of Cal Ripken and Brooks Robinson will be unveiled in September. ... Royals OF Jarrod Dyson didn't start after spraining his left ankle Friday night. Yost said Dyson was day to day and could have been used in an emergency. ... Jones was hit by a pitch for the 10th time, most on the team.
