A weekend in San Diego seems to be helping to fix whatever was ailing the San Francisco Giants .
Perhaps the same will be true for Ryan Vogelsong .
The league's ERA leader prior to a horrific last outing, Vogelsong looks to bounce back Sunday and lead the Giants to a three-game sweep of the slumping Padres with a crucial NL West series looming on the horizon.
The Giants (66-54) arrived in San Diego losers in four of their last seven games and 12 of 21, but they've righted the ship by racking up 18 runs and 29 hits to take the first two games of the weekend against the Padres (52-70). The resurgence may be coming at just the right time for the Giants, who will travel to Los Angeles on Monday to open a three-game showdown with the arch-rival Dodgers.
San Francisco leads Los Angeles by one-half game atop the West, where the runner-up is not currently in line for a wild-card spot.
The Giants have totaled 22 runs and are batting .319 in three contests since All-Star outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended 50 games following a positive test for testosterone.
"It's fun to see our offense work," said third baseman Pablo Sandoval , who had two hits and drove in a run. "When you have guys coming through in RBI situations, I'm happy for that."Vogelsong (10-6, 2.72 ERA) currently ranks fourth in the NL in ERA, but he led the league with a 2.27 mark prior to Monday's 14-2 loss to Washington. The right-hander allowed eight runs and nine hits in 2 2-3 innings - the first start of 2012 in which he'd failed to go at least six - while allowing 11 of the 19 batters he faced to reach base.
"Sharpness was not the issue," Vogelsong said. "Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way. It's part of the game. I have the whole rest of the season to not let one start ruin it."Vogelsong has made two brutal appearances at Petco Park - one start and one in relief - giving up nine runs and seven hits over 2 1-3 innings, but has not pitched there since 2005.
Padres starter Clayton Richard (9-12, 3.91) is also looking to put a rough start behind him. Six days after pitching a five-hitter against the Chicago Cubs for his second career shutout, the left-hander yielded five runs and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings of Tuesday's 6-0 loss at Atlanta.
Richard fared even worse the last time he faced San Francisco, giving up seven runs in five innings of a 7-1 defeat. He's lost all three of his outings versus the Giants this year while posting a 7.64 ERA and .360 opponent batting average.
Richard's last start marked the beginning of San Diego's current five-game skid. The Padres dropped a season-high six straight May 25-30.
On the bright side for the Padres, their seven runs Saturday were five more than they'd totaled through the first four games of their losing streak. Chase Headley hit a three-run homer - his major league-leading eighth in August - and Carlos Quentin added a solo shot.
"It's been nice to hit a couple of homers," Headley said. "You try to focus on wins and losses. When you don't win, it really doesn't matter to you."| HITTERS | AB | AVG | H | HR | RBI | BB | SO | OBP | OPS | SLG |

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Clayton Richard pitched a strong game and Cameron Maybin led a relentless offense. However, it was Everth Cabrera who was the talk of the Padres' locker room.
Richard threw a commanding eight innings and Maybin drove in three runs as the San Diego Padres snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.
But Cabrera's 13-pitch at-bat - on all fastballs - against Ryan Vogelsong (10-7) leading off the first inning drew a lot of credit for San Diego's success.
Cabrera eventually struck out swinging after fouling off seven straight pitches with the count full.
"That first at-bat, from our side, was awesome," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Being in those shoes, it's not a great way to start the game. Mentally, as a starting pitcher, you're not in a good way."
Vogelsong threw 35 pitches in the first inning when San Diego sent eight men to bat and scored three runs. The right-hander threw another 31 pitches in the second inning when the Padres loaded the bases.
"That at-bat fired us up," Maybin said. "Cabby came out and set the tone with that big at-bat."
Said Cabrera: "I was just trying to see the ball and put it in play."
Vogelsong, who had his second straight subpar outing, disagreed with effect of Cabrera's at-bat.
"It's 13 pitches," he said. "They fouled a bunch of balls off. Both teams did."
The Giants dropped out of first in the NL West and trail the Dodgers by a half-game heading into their big three-game series in Los Angeles. Madison Bumgarner is scheduled to face Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in the opener on Monday night.
Richard (10-12) allowed an unearned run and five hits while improving to 3-1 with a 2.02 ERA in his last five starts. The left-hander was 0-3 with a 7.64 ERA in his three previous starts against San Francisco this season.
"It starts with the starting pitcher," Black said. "He answered the bell. He wasn't feeling well (in his last start) and it stayed with him. He was a little fuzzy, but as the game wore on, he set the tone."
Maybin tied his career high with four hits, including a two-run single in the first inning.
"Not being happy with this year, you still want to go up there and believe you can keep producing," said Maybin, who has had a disappointing season after signing a five-year, $25-million extension in the spring.
Cabrera and Will Venable had three hits apiece and San Diego finished with 16 overall, while avoiding matching its longest losing streak of the season.
San Francisco had scored 22 times and managed 37 hits in three games since outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended on Wednesday for 50 games following a positive test for testosterone.
The Padres improved to 4-8 against San Francisco this season and 10-20 over the last two years.
Vogelsong gave up eight runs and nine hits in 2 2-3 innings in a 14-2 loss to Washington on Monday. The right-hander lasted three-plus innings against San Diego and was charged with three runs and eight hits. Over his last two outings, his ERA has increased from an NL-best 2.27 to 2.85.
"The first inning was a long inning," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "It probably caught up with him. It was pretty amazing the number of pitches he threw."
Venable hit a one-out single in the first, stole second and scored on Carlos Quentin 's base hit. After Yonder Alonso singled and Alexi Amarista walked, Maybin drove in two more runs with a single.
The Giants countered with a run in the second after Buster Posey reached on Venable's two-base error when he dropped a routine fly ball to right. Posey went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Hunter Pence 's sacrifice fly.
The Padres added three more in the fifth. Amarista hit a leadoff triple and scored on Maybin's single. Cabrera added a two-run double.
NOTES: Vogelsong's last two starts are his only outings this season that he did not pitch at least six innings. ... San Diego 3B Chase Headley was ejected before he took the field for the top of the fifth inning by home plate umpire Brian O'Nora. Headley flew out for the second out of the fourth and flung his bat down. But he never made it out of the dugout to take his position in the fifth. ... Quentin was hit by a pitch for the 14th time this season in the second inning to tie Philadelphia's Carlos Ruiz for the major league lead. Quentin has reached the total in nearly 100 fewer at-bats. ... The Giants are 7-0-3 in their last 10 series against San Diego. ... Pirates LHP Wandy Rodriguez was scheduled to start against Padres RHP Edinson Volquez (7-9, 4.31 ERA) on Monday night in San Diego. But Rodriguez pitched in relief in Pittsburgh's extra-inning game on Sunday at St. Louis.
