The Texas Rangers have yet to go 22 games over .500 this season. A few more matchups with the Baltimore Orioles , and they're likely to go well beyond that.
Texas looks to reach its high point of the season and continue its dominance over the visiting Orioles when these teams continue a three-game set Tuesday night.
Overshadowed by Josh Hamilton 's four-homer game at Baltimore on May 8 was the Rangers (71-50) taking three of four in that series to make it eight wins in the past nine meetings. Texas added to its success against the Orioles with a 5-1 victory in Monday's series opener. Ryan Dempster pitched eight strong innings in his best start since coming over in a trade with the Chicago Cubs .
"It's fun to play games like this," said David Murphy , the only Ranger with more than one hit. "We got a great performance out of Ryan Dempster ."Monday's game was relatively close compared to some of the recent matchups between these teams. Texas has outscored Baltimore 87-28 in the last 10 meetings and is batting .345 while sporting a 2.58 ERA during that span.
This is the third time this season that the Rangers have been 21 games over .500, failing to go 22 above July 1 and Aug. 13. After going 9-14 and scoring a major league-worst 81 runs in July, Texas is 12-7 and has scored an AL-best 104 runs this month.
Adam Jones had half of Baltimore's four hits and the team's lone RBI on Monday but has gone homerless in 88 straight at-bats, his longest drought of the season.
The Orioles (66-56) dropped to 2-2 on a six-game trip with their fifth loss in 16 games overall.
"Every game at this point is I'm not saying do-or-die, but damn near," Jones said. "We're trying to do something that hasn't been done here in a long time. Coming here to Texas is a big stepping stone. They're a first-place team. We need to win series at this point of the season. We've been doing it of late and we need to continue that trend."Scott Feldman (6-8, 4.63 ERA) will try to help the Rangers win four straight for the second time this month.
The right-hander is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his last two starts after winning his previous six decisions - one in relief. He limited the Yankees to three runs - all in the third - over six innings of a 3-2 loss Wednesday but had to pitch out of trouble in the fourth, fifth and sixth.
Feldman is 4-0 with a 3.43 ERA in 11 appearances - five starts - against the Orioles. He's done an excellent job against Jones, limiting the center fielder to one hit in 12 at-bats.
Baltimore is scheduled to start Chris Tillman (5-2, 3.65), who has struggled his last two outings but has fond memories of his last start in Arlington.
After allowing a season-high six earned runs over 5 2-3 innings in a loss to Kansas City on Aug. 11, the right-hander needed 110 pitches to get through 4 2-3 innings Thursday against Boston. He escaped without a decision after giving up three runs and six hits.
Tillman took a no-hitter into the seventh in a 6-1 victory at Texas on July 10, 2010. He ended up allowing one unearned run and two hits over 7 1-3 innings in perhaps the best performance of his career.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Chris Tillman 's success against the potent Rangers offense is no longer a secret. And his methods aren't really either.
Nate McLouth hit a two-run home run in the Orioles' decisive four-run fifth inning of a 5-3 victory against Texas on Tuesday night, and the Baltimore right-hander kept Rangers hitters off-balance with effective off-speed pitches and good command of his fastball.
Tillman worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out seven before giving way to the bullpen, which now has a 1.57 ERA in the last 18 games.
That follows a performance two years ago in which Tillman held the Rangers to two runs on two hits and a walk over a career-high 7 1/3 innings.
"It ain't easy," said Tillman, who improved to 6-2 on the season with a 3.71 ERA and 4-1 on the road.
"These guys have a great lineup and you have to respect that whether you're ahead or behind."
Manny Machado had a run-scoring triple and J.J. Hardy's two-out double in the fifth plated another run in the fifth, which was followed with two shutdown innings by Tillman.
Jim Johnson worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his 38th save.
"Chris was good," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He had command of the breaking ball early, and threw the fastball on both sides of the plate."
The Rangers scored two on Geovany Soto 's two-run homer in the seventh inning to close a 5-1 deficit to two and then put the tying run on base, but Pedro Strop struck out Josh Hamilton on a slider to end the threat.
David Murphy , 10 for 19 with a homer and three doubles and six RBI in his previous five games, went 1 for 4 on Tuesday, including a groundout with a runner on base to end the Rangers' half of the eighth.
"Pedy got a couple of big outs for us," Showalter said. The bullpen "has been a constant for us. We've been able to share the load and pass it around.
"We've got a lot of people we have confidence in."
Scott Feldman , who won six consecutive decisions in May and June, surrendered five runs - including four earned, though that run scored on a wild pitch - on seven hits in five innings in losing his third in a row.
He struck out four and walked one while ending a string of good performances by Rangers pitching, which entered Tuesday having allowed two runs or less in three consecutive games and just four total in the three-game winning streak.
The starting rotation had posted a 2.96 ERA in the previous seven games.
"I thought he made a real good pitch to Hardy and he went down and poked it to right field," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Feldman. "I think if there's any pitch he'd want to take back in that inning, it would be the one to McLouth, but other than that, there was no indication they were going to put four runs on the board because both he and Tillman were pitching very well."
The AL West-division leading Rangers lost a game to Los Angeles in the standings and lead the Angels by eight games. Oakland, which started the evening six back, were playing late at home against Minnesota.
The Orioles broke loose for four runs in the fifth. Machado's triple scored Omar Quintanilla and McLouth sent a Feldman pitch into the left-field seats for a two-run home run that made the score 5-1.
"All you're trying to do in that situation is limit the damage," Feldman said. "Even after giving up that hit to Hardy, we're still in the game. I just made a bad pitch to McLouth."
The Rangers' Ian Kinsler hit his 14th home run of the season to tie the game in the third on a 1-0 pitch.
The Orioles took a first-inning lead by scoring an unearned run with two outs.
McLouth walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error when Soto's throw sailed into center field. He scored on Feldman's wild pitch.
Notes: Entering the game, three of the top 22 qualifiers in ERA as relievers in the AL were Orioles. Pedro Strop (2nd, 1.49), Darren O'Day (17th, 2.49) and Troy Patton (22nd, 2.58). . The Rangers' Adrian Beltre , hitting .235 in his previous 30 games, went 2 for 4 on Tuesday. . The Orioles have won 12 consecutive one-run games. The franchise has done that on three other occasions, 1964, 1970 and 1979. Baltimore went to the World Series in 1970 and `79 and won 97 games and finished two games back of eventual World Series champion New York Yankees in `64. . Rangers reliever Michael Kirkman extended a scoreless innings streak to seven in his last six games after holding the Orioles to no runs in two innings. Kirkman also has stranded 11 of the last 13 inherited runners, including three in a game three times.
