It's almost fitting that the Arizona Diamondbacks will play the franchise's first doubleheader in Phoenix on a day severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the valley.
The inclement weather, however, has nothing to do with the twinbill at the retractable-roof ballpark.
The Diamondbacks are hopeful Wednesday's day-night doubleheader goes a bit better than their first two games with the Miami Marlins , who are suddenly winning behind the red-hot Giancarlo Stanton .
Arizona's first home doubleheader is a result of a scheduling snafu. The Diamondbacks (62-61) were originally slated to play games on 23 consecutive days, which is a violation of the basic agreement between the owners and players. So in early August, the league turned Wednesday's game into a doubleheader, providing Arizona with a day off Thursday.
The Diamondbacks entered this series riding a four-game winning streak but have lost the first two contests to drop six back of NL West-leading San Francisco.
Stanton has come up huge for Miami (57-67). He homered twice in Monday's 12-3 win and hit a run-scoring single with two outs in the 10th inning in Tuesday's 6-5 final as the Marlins rallied from a five-run, first-inning deficit.
"I stopped swinging so dang hard and just put the ball in play," said Stanton, who is batting .414 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in his last seven games - five Miami wins. His presence in the batter's box will likely be an unsettling sight for top prospect Tyler Skaggs , who is expected to make his major league debut in the opener.
The 21-year-old left-hander began the season in Double-A before going 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Reno, yielding one earned run or fewer seven times.
Skaggs will be opposed by Jacob Turner , who is scheduled to be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to make his Marlins debut.
Turner, the No. 9 pick in the 2009 draft, was acquired from Detroit as part of the trade for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante on July 23. The 21-year-old right-hander had an 8.03 ERA in three starts for the Tigers, but he went 2-0 with a 1.98 ERA in five starts for the Zephyrs.
Turner's stay with the big league club could be short-lived, but manager Ozzie Guillen would like to see him stick around.
"I think we should keep him here to see if we can count on him next year, or exactly what stage he is in," Guillen told the Marlins' official website.
In the nightcap, Guillen will give the ball to Wade LeBlanc (2-2, 2.50 ERA).
After going 0-1 with a 1.76 ERA in his first three games since being inserted in the rotation, the lefty yielded five runs and nine hits in five innings at Colorado on Friday, but got credit for a 6-5 win.
LeBlanc was 2-1 with a 5.17 ERA in three starts versus the Diamondbacks last season with San Diego, and is 1-2 with a 9.17 ERA in four career starts in Arizona.
The Diamondbacks will counter with Wade Miley (13-8, 2.96), who gave up a run and eight hits over six innings in Friday's 3-1 victory over Houston. The southpaw bounced back after allowing six runs in 4 1-3 innings in a loss to Washington on Aug. 11 - the only time in his last four starts he allowed more than one run.
That outing against the Nationals, however, came at Chase Field, where he is 1-3 with a 4.63 ERA in his last four games. He was 5-1 with a 1.99 ERA in his first six starts in Phoenix.
Miley had no trouble pitching in Miami on April 29. He gave up an unearned run, one hit and two walks in 6 1-3 innings of an 8-4 victory, his only career start against the Marlins.

PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks sent two young left-handers to the mound for the first home doubleheader in franchise history and had two more victories by the time the day was over.
It looks as if the kids are all right.
Rookie Wade Miley pitched eight innings to earn his 14th victory, and Arizona beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 Wednesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.
Tyler Skaggs made his major league debut in the opener, allowing two runs and three hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 3-2 Diamondbacks win.
Both pitchers were efficient. The first game went 2 hours, 20 minutes, the second was just seven minutes longer.
"Good thing," Miami manager Ozzie Guillen cracked about the rapid pace. "We didn't have to suffer, send us to intensive care and be dead. Instead, (they) just kill us right away."
Miley (14-8) gave up four singles, struck out five and walked one.
"It was really important to try to just stay in there and get early outs and keep the pitch count down," he said, "then expand it and go eight."
Miley struck out the side on 11 pitches in the eighth.
"He threw his pitches with a ton of conviction, and he does it very quickly," manager Kirk Gibson said.
Guillen was impressed.
"This kid is tough," the Miami manager said, "and on top of that, Gibby gives him a lot of confidence. When you are rookie and the manager gives you a lot of confidence and you use it, they are doing a great job with him."
Catcher Wil Nieves caught Miley for the second time, and he said the 25-year-old pitcher never shakes him off.
"He just trusts you," Nieves said, "and he goes with whatever you put (down). He just concentrates on hitting the spots."
Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run in the first, then doubled and scored in the fourth for Arizona. Aaron Hill had a two-run homer and an RBI single in the first game.
Miami's Wade LeBlanc (2-3) gave up three runs, two earned, and five hits in seven innings in the nightcap.
J.J. Putz pitched a scoreless ninth in both games for his 16th and 17th consecutive saves. He said it was the first time in his career he's had two saves in one day. Putz has 26 saves in 29 tries on the year.
With the sweep, the Diamondbacks salvaged a split of the four-game series.
Justin Ruggiano hit a two-run homer off Skaggs for Miami's only runs in 18 innings on the day. After collecting 35 hits while winning the first two games of the series, the Marlins managed 10 total in the doubleheader.
A.J. Pollock, just recalled from Triple-A Reno, got Arizona off to a fast start in the second game. He hit a leadoff single in the first, made it to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on Goldschmidt's single.
The Diamondbacks added two more in the fourth. Chris Johnson had a bloop RBI single and Goldschmidt scampered home when Rob Brantly had a passed ball with Miley at the plate.
Miami had two runners on with no outs in the seventh, but Miley escaped by retiring Carlos Lee and Austin Kearns on fly balls to right and coaxing Ruggiano into a fielder's choice.
The Marlins turned in a couple of defensive gems in the second game, but it wasn't enough. Center fielder Gorkys Hernandez made an outstanding diving grab of Gerardo Parra 's deep fly ball in the fifth, and Ruggiano cut down Hill trying to score from second on Chris Young 's single in the eighth.
Arizona also showed off its defensive skills. Young made a lunging grab of Bryan Petersen 's line drive to center in the ninth in the second game.
The 21-year-old Skaggs yielded Ruggiano's homer in the second, then shut down the Marlins on one hit the rest of his outing. He fanned four and survived five walks.
When he left the game, Skaggs got a standing ovation from the 17,239 in attendance, the smallest home crowd for Arizona this season. The small crowd didn't matter to Skaggs, who appreciated the response.
"It was phenomenal," he said. "I mean, the greatest feeling I've had so far in my life."
Jacob Turner (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings in his first start for Miami since coming to the Marlins in a trade deadline deal with Detroit.
"Outstanding," Guillen said. "He was relaxed on the mound, very nice and loose. He was throwing a lot of strikes. He made one bad pitch but I like what I see."
Guillen had to watch most of it on a television in the clubhouse.
He was ejected by first base umpire Angel Campos after the top of the third inning of the opener. It was the second time he has been tossed this season.
"I have been ejected 27 times but that one was a weird one," Guillen said. "The excuse he is going to make is I was throwing water at him. I never did. I just threw water on the field then some of the players were telling me I got kicked out of the game."
NOTES: The series featured three of the four smallest home crowds for the Diamondbacks this season. ... Guillen said OF Emilio Bonifacio "will be out for a little while" with a sprained right knee. He was injured early in Tuesday night's game, was out of the lineup and underwent an MRI. ... Arizona OF Justin Upton sat out the games with a sore right hamstring. An MRI was negative, the Diamondbacks said.
