Four days in Minnesota could be what the Seattle Mariners need to get another winning streak going.
Following a gem from their ace, the Mariners hope rookie starter Hisashi Iwakuma can continue his recent success and help them defeat the Twins for a seventh straight time Tuesday night.
Seattle (62-67) led in all three contests over the weekend in Chicago, but lost each one after concluding a nine-game homestand with eight consecutive victories.
The Mariners bounced back in Monday's series opener at Minnesota when Felix Hernandez tossed a five-hitter for his 23rd career complete game in a 1-0 victory. Eric Thames ' eighth-inning homer was one of the three hits Seattle could muster against Liam Hendricks, but it provided the winning margin.
"It was a good feeling, especially to know that it gave Felix a lead," Thames said. "It's awesome."Since losing their first meeting this season with the Twins (52-76), the Mariners have outscored Minnesota 26-8 while winning the next six between the clubs.
Thames' homer was only his second hit in his last 10 at-bats overall, but he's batting .348 (8 for 23) with two home runs and seven RBIs in eight games versus Minnesota in 2012.
Iwakuma (4-3, 3.64 ERA) is 3-1 with a 2.27 ERA in his last seven starts, and has allowed one earned run in 12 2-3 innings over his last two. That stretch includes a 5-3 win over Minnesota on Aug. 17, when he yielded an unearned run, four hits and struck out six in seven innings.
The right-hander gave up one earned run in 5 2-3 innings Wednesday while not factoring in the decision of a 3-1 win over Cleveland.
The 31-year-old Iwakuma, who played professionally in Japan from 2000-2011, is 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts since joining the Seattle rotation July 2.
"His experience has really shown up, as far as I'm concerned, over here," manager Eric Wedge told the Mariners' official website. "He's technically a rookie, but he doesn't pitch like that because of all the time he spent starting in Japan."
Minnesota counters with Scott Diamond (10-5, 3.04), who makes his first start since he earned a six-game suspension for throwing near the head of Texas' Josh Hamilton during Thursday's 10-6 loss. Diamond, who is appealing the suspension, was ejected immediately following the pitch. The left-hander allowed two runs, three hits and two walks in 2 1-3 innings. He insisted it was not intentional even though Twins star Joe Mauer was beaned by Roy Oswalt in the top of the third.
"I was trying to work in on the pitch and it definitely got away from me," Diamond told the Twins' official website. "My control wasn't as great. I'm just glad nobody got hurt."
Minnesota's most consistent starter, Diamond is 2-1 with a 2.75 ERA in his last six outings. He gave up two runs in 6 2-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 3-2 loss at Seattle on Aug. 18.
Mauer had one of the five hits Monday for Minnesota, which has lost 15 of 18. He is 4 for 25 (.160) in his last seven games, and 5 for 28 (.179) versus Seattle this season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Seattle's late-summer surge has been fueled, naturally, by strong starting pitching.
Even the offense has been perking up. After so many rough seasons, August has been a pleasant month for these Mariners.
Dustin Ackley hit a three-run homer, Hisashi Iwakuma was hard to hit and the Mariners beat the stumbling Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Tuesday night.
"Ever since the All-Star break I feel like we've been hitting more consistently," Ackley said. "We've had a couple games where we might not have scored as many as we like, but overall I feel like our hitting has been great."
Iwakuma (5-3) gave up one hit and one unearned run over six innings in another strong start for the rookie from Japan. The right-hander struck out four and helped send the Twins to their 16th defeat in their last 19 games despite four walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch.
"He did it the hard way," manager Eric Wedge said. "He was erratic. Didn't quite have the same command that he normally does, but he didn't give into it."
Ackley hit a fastball from Scott Diamond (10-6) into the flower bed above right-center field following consecutive singles by Trayvon Robinson and Brendan Ryan to start the fifth.
"I just left it right in his bat path," said Diamond, who gave up more than three runs for the first time in seven starts since July 21.
After Ryan Doumit 's RBI double off Charlie Furbush , Tom Wilhelmsen got the last out of the ninth inning for his 20th save in 23 attempts. The announced attendance was 29,854, the first sub-30,000 crowd to watch the Twins since Target Field opened in 2010.
The Mariners, who began the day nine games behind in the AL wild-card race, have won 12 of their last 16. They have won seven straight against the Twins and raised their record to 63-67.
"I think after we had a couple of those winning streaks and started hitting real well I think it was in everybody's mind," Ackley said of reaching the .500 mark. "I think the more we won the more we believed that we could do that."
Iwakuma is 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA in his last eight starts. Mariners starters, buoyed by ace Felix Hernandez , who spun a five-hit shutout Monday, are 19-8 with a 2.74 ERA in the last 37 games. Since the All-Star break they have the second-best ERA in the majors.
"Pitching, I don't think that's ever been a problem here," Ackley said.
But hitting has been. The Mariners remain on pace to finish in the bottom five in the majors in runs scored for a fifth straight season. Lately, there has been improvement.
Diamond gave up a double to Ryan and walked Franklin Gutierrez with two outs in the third before Kyle Seager 's two-run double put the Mariners on the board. Seager leads the majors with 43 two-out RBIs.
Ryan had three hits, matching his season high, and raised his batting average to .202.
"He's at his best when he's aggressive and lets the bat go," Wedge said, adding: "When he just relaxes and let's it go out there and just hits, he's got a good swing."
With his unorthodox, halting windup and the exaggerated kick of his right leg before he releases the ball, Iwakuma had the Twins off balance all game. He allowed a run before he surrendered a hit, when consecutive walks set up Ben Revere for a sacrifice fly in the third. Not until one out into the fifth did the Twins get a hit, a single by Jamey Carroll .
Iwakuma, who joined the rotation on July 2, said through his interpreter he struggled to feel comfortable on the mound.
"I tried to fight it by myself. The most I could do was not give up any runs," he said.
Carroll called him "effectively wild." The Twins finished with four hits.
"You've got to tip your hat to him, I guess," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He made the pitches when he had to. Even when we got into hitting counts, we didn't do anything with it."
NOTES: CF Denard Span was scratched from the Twins' lineup two hours before the game due to a sore collarbone. He has had discomfort in that area since diving for a ball and landing hard on Aug. 12, playing in only four of the past 15 games. ... Mariners CF Michael Saunders missed his fourth straight game with a strained groin muscle, but Wedge said he's making progress and should be back by the end of the series. ... LHP Jason Vargas (13-8, 3.75 ERA) pitches for the Mariners in Wednesday's game, bringing only one loss in his last 11 starts since late June. He did allow six runs in four innings in his last turn, at Chicago against the White Sox. RHP Samuel Deduno (4-2, 4.24 ERA) takes the mound for the Twins. He pitched six strong innings in a loss in Seattle on Aug. 19. ... The Mariners have homered in 11 straight games. Justin Morneau has the only home run for the Twins in their last 11 games. ... Diamond's appeal of a six-game suspension meted out by Major League Baseball last week is still pending. He was ejected for throwing a pitch behind Rangers All-Star Josh Hamilton in Texas.
