The third-place Pittsburgh Pirates aren't likely to catch the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds , and could soon find themselves out of playoff contention entirely.
Facing Mat Latos isn't likely to help their cause.
Losers in seven of their last nine, the Pirates could be hard-pressed to snap their longest road losing streak in two years in Monday night's series opener against Latos and the Reds.
Pittsburgh (72-67) looked like a legitimate force in the Central as recently as a month ago but has dropped 20 of 29 since Aug. 9 to fall 11 games behind Cincinnati (84-57). The Pirates are 2 1/2 games behind wild-card leading St. Louis, but will need to considerably pick up the pace going forward if they hope to have a chance.
Pittsburgh failed to take advantage of a favorable matchup over the weekend, suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of the visiting Chicago Cubs . The Pirates were outscored 20-7 by the majors' second-worst club while batting .160 - including a 3-for-21 effort with runners in scoring position.
Pittsburgh went 0 for 11 in such situations in Sunday's finale, falling 4-2.
"We need to play better - that's it," manager Clint Hurdle said. "I'm not going to get up here and point fingers or this and that or say this ... I'm telling you how I feel - we've got to play batter. And that's it. And they know that."
Things aren't about to get any easier for the Pirates, who've dropped six in a row on the road - their longest single-season skid since a 14-game drought July 29-Aug. 30, 2010 - by a 38-21 margin.
Latos (12-4, 3.69 ERA) is 7-2 with a 2.44 ERA over his last 14 starts, allowing two earned runs or fewer in all but two of those outings. He's also given Pittsburgh fits over the course of his career, going 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA in five matchups.
Two of those have come this season. Latos won both while striking out 16 over 13 1-3 scoreless innings and posting a .136 opponent batting average.
"He has just enough to get you with that high pitch, and he can bury a pitch in the dirt when he wants to," Hurdle said of Latos after watching him pitch during a 3-0 loss at Cincinnati on Aug. 3.
Latos, who outdueled Wandy Rodriguez (10-13, 3.71) in that game, also took the left-hander deep for his first homer of the season.
Rodriguez, though, has been dominant in winning his last two starts. He threw six innings of three-hit ball in a 5-0 win over St. Louis on Aug. 29, then scattered four hits and struck out seven over seven scoreless innings Tuesday in a 6-2 win over Houston.
Rodriguez has typically struggled against Cincinnati, going 8-11 with a 4.39 ERA over 27 career starts - 26 of which came while with Houston. He faces a Reds team, though, that's been limited to 15 runs during a 2-4 skid.
Cincinnati most recently dropped two of three to the major league-worst Astros. Jay Bruce continued his hot hitting Sunday with a 2-for-4 effort and drove in the Reds' only run in a 5-1 loss.
"You have these spells in a season. You just hope you time it right and continue to build momentum," Joey Votto told the Reds' official website. "We have one goal in mind. As a unit, we will continue to push towards it."
Bruce, batting .438 with six homers and 15 RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak, is 2 for 29 with 15 strikeouts lifetime versus Rodriguez.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Ryan Ludwick 's simple grounder ended the Reds' longest game of the season. No such reprieve for the Pittsburgh Pirates , whose misery goes on.
Ludwick drove in the winning run with a two-out infield single in the 14th inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a marathon 4-3 victory Monday night that handed the fading Pirates their fourth straight loss.
Rick VandenHurk (0-1), called up before the game, started the 14th and gave up a single by Devin Mesoraco . Brandon Phillips reached when the Pirates failed to get a forceout on his grounder, and the runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Pirates shortstop Chase d'Arnaud couldn't come up with Ludwick's grounder in the hole, finally ending it.
"I stunk the entire game," said Ludwick, who was 0 for 5 before the final at-bat. "I must've had a thousand chances to win the game, and I finally did it on the thousandth chance. Every time I came up, it seemed like there were guys on base. I'm glad I finally got it done in ... what inning was it? The 14th?"
Yes, the 14th. And there was plenty of drama in both halves of it.
The Pirates loaded the bases with none out in the top of the 14th against Alfredo Simon (2-2) and failed to score - Jose Tabata grounded out to end the threat. The organist played "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" again between innings.
It was the Reds' longest game of the season in innings and time - 5 hours, 22 minutes. The Pirates played a 19-inning, 6-hour game against St. Louis last month.
"That was a game we needed big-time," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said. "We were spent, emotionally and physically."
Imagine what the Pirates felt!
Their slump - four straight losses and 21 in the last 30 games - has dropped them a season-high 12 games behind the first-place Reds in the NL Central.
"Well, you know, I've heard that whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We're fighting through this thing. This has been a big push for us. It's been a hard time for a while."
Sam LeCure bailed out Reds closer Aroldis Chapman to keep it tied in the 10th, retiring Michael McKenry on a grounder with the bases loaded. LeCure struck out the side in the 11th.
Chapman had trouble getting his fastball up to speed in his first appearance since Friday, when he had his club-record streak of 27 straight saves snapped. Chapman walked the bases loaded around a pair of outs, his fastball topping out at 96 mph.
Baker said after the game that Chapman will get some rest.
"His velocity's down," Baker said. "There's no pain, but he might be a little tired. We might have to rest him for a few days. He was analyzed by the doctor and his shoulder might be a little fatigued."
The Reds wasted a chance in the bottom of the 10th, leaving the bases loaded when Jay Bruce struck out. Bruce went 0 for 5, ending his nine-game hitting streak.
Plate umpire Phil Cuzzi warned both benches after Jared Hughes hit Brandon Phillips in the leg with a one-out pitch in the eighth. Phillips paused a moment, picked up the ball and tossed it back toward the mound before heading to first base. The Pirates were upset earlier in the season when a couple of their players got plunked in games.
The game drew 16,577 fans, the smallest crowd at Great American Ball Park this season. The second-smallest crowd of the season also was for a Pirates game - 16,859 for a 5-4 Reds win on June 6.
Pittsburgh left-hander Wandy Rodriguez allowed only one hit through the first six innings - Chris Heisey 's solo homer. Hughes relieved in the seventh and gave up a two-run double by Dioner Navarro that tied it at 3.
Andrew McCutchen homered off Mat Latos , who got a no-decision and remained unbeaten against the Pirates in his career. The right-hander gave up three runs and remained 4-0 in six career starts against Pittsburgh, allowing a total of nine runs.
NOTES: There were more than 500 dogs in the stands as part of a promotion that allowed fans to bring their pets. ... VandenHurk and d'Arnaud were called up before the game, along with RHP Bryan Morris . ... The Reds went 32-16 without 1B Joey Votto and are 2-3 since his return. Votto celebrated his 29th birthday. ... Reds SS Zack Cozart missed his sixth straight game with a strained oblique muscle. ... Reds 3B Scott Rolen took grounders at third base before the game to test his back, which sidelined him for four games, and pinch-hit in the 13th. He grounded out.
