The Baltimore Orioles were staring at the possibility of a winless homestand. Instead, they have a chance to take to the road on a positive note when they wrap up their series with the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.
Baltimore's struggles at Camden Yards have dropped it into a tie for third with Tampa Bay in the AL East, five games off the pace set by the Yankees (28-17). The Orioles (24-21), though, defeated New York 3-2 in 10 innings Tuesday on Nate McLouth 's walkoff homer.
"We really needed this win," said outfielder Chris Dickerson , who had two solo homers. "This team continues to grind, continues to push forward even when the chips are down. Nate came up huge. This was one of those things that can turn it around."The win came a night after the Yankees rallied against closer Jim Johnson and went on to a 6-4 victory in 10 innings. However, Johnson pitched a perfect inning for the win Tuesday to help Baltimore snap a six-game overall losing streak and seven-game slide at home.
The Orioles now have a chance to wrap up their eight-game homestand with two victories before facing Toronto and Washington on the road for the next six games.
"It was nice to win, period," manager Buck Showalter said. "Anytime, regardless of yesterday and the day before. We don't get bogged down in that woe is me and this means that. You've got to keep turning the page."That may be a challenge with the Yankees turning to Hiroki Kuroda (6-2, 1.99 ERA), who will try to win his third consecutive start and shut down Baltimore for the second time this year. The right-hander scattered two hits and one walk in eight innings of a 5-0 victory over Toronto on Friday, giving him a 5-1 mark and 1.38 ERA in his past seven starts.
Kuroda notched his fifth shutout at the Orioles' expense April 14, tossing a five-hitter in a 3-0 victory. He is 2-1 with a 1.85 ERA in three lifetime starts versus Baltimore and will be making his first appearance at Camden Yards.
After a strong start to the season, Jason Hammel (5-2, 5.72) is trying to rediscover that form after being hit hard in his last two outings. He allowed season worsts of seven runs and 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 12-10 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday, and has been reached for 13 runs and 18 hits in 8 2-3 innings in the past two appearances.
"I'm missing out over the plate, arm-side with my fastball," Hammel, whose ERA has jumped 1.62 runs his last two starts, told the team's official website. "It's a pretty simple fix, but for right now, it's seemingly a little bit difficult for me."
Hammel beat the Yankees on April 13, giving up three runs - two on solo homers - in six innings of a 5-3 victory. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.82 ERA in nine starts and 15 lifetime appearances versus New York.
Robinson Cano has gone 10 for 26 (.385) with two doubles and a homer against Hammel, while Vernon Wells is 5 for 14 with two solo homers.
The Yankees have scored four or fewer runs in all eight of their road losses. They led 1-0 in the first inning Tuesday but lost for the first time in 20 games when scoring first this season.
"We have to do a better job of adding on when we do score runs early," Wells said.| HITTERS | AB | AVG | H | HR | RBI | BB | SO | OBP | OPS | SLG |

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A series that began with a disheartening defeat ended in uplifting fashion for the Baltimore Orioles .
Chris Davis went 4 for 4, including his AL-leading 14th homer, and Baltimore got a three-run shot from Matt Wieters in a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday night.
Nick Markakis added a solo home run for the Orioles, who took two of three from New York to pull within three games of the first-place Yankees in the AL East.
In the opener Monday night, Baltimore closer Jim Johnson blew a ninth-inning lead and Baltimore absorbed its sixth straight loss. The Orioles rebounded to win in 10 innings on Tuesday night before coasting in the finale.
"Anytime a division rival comes in, you want to try to win the series especially when you're at home," Davis said. "We avoided the snowball effect to some degree and were able to get back on track."
Jason Hammel (6-2) gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings to even his lifetime record against the Yankees to 3-3. The right-hander allowed a combined 13 earned runs over 8 2-3 innings in his previous two starts.
In part because Hammel got back on track, so did the Orioles.
"It's huge, especially after losing six in a row," he said. "To come out and play these guys toe to toe and come out with two out of three, I think, is pretty good."
Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda left in the third with a bruised right calf, one inning after he was struck in the leg by a line drive off the bat of Manny Machado . Kuroda (6-3) allowed five runs and eight hits in two-plus innings.
"I wasn't too worried about the injury beyond tonight but was worried that it might matter tonight and it did," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I thought he had trouble pushing off it. It was unfortunate that he was hit by the ball."
Girardi suspected Kuroda would be able to make his next start, but the right-hander wasn't sure.
"It will depend on how I feel tomorrow, but for me, I'm going to make that start," Kuroda said through a translator.
Curtis Granderson homered, doubled and singled for New York. Needing a triple to reach the cycle, he drew a walk in the seventh inning.
Playing in his seventh game since returning from a broken wrist, Granderson batted leadoff and played center field for the first time. He came in batting .174.
"It's like an opening week of the season for me. No different," he said before the game.
Girardi said, "I liked how he was swinging the bat. I thought it was a matter of time before he started getting some hits. He swung the bat great tonight."
David Adams hit a ninth-inning homer for the Yankees, his second in three games. The teams combined for 13 home runs in the series, including five in the finale.
After Kuroda retired the first two batters he faced, Markakis homered. Adam Jones followed with a single and Davis hit a 3-2 pitch over the wall in center.
In the second, Nate McLouth singled with two outs, stole second and took third on Machado's single off Kuroda's leg. Although Markakis hit a fly to end the threat, at that point the Orioles had six hits - one more than Kuroda allowed in his complete game shutout against Baltimore on April 14.
The Yankees got a run back in the third when Granderson doubled and scored on a single by Robinson Cano .
But Baltimore pulled away in the bottom half. Jones doubled and after Davis singled, Kuroda grimaced near the mound. A discussion involving the New York trainer, Kuroda and Girardi ensued. The right-hander eventually walked off the field.
Preston Claiborne entered, and Wieters homered on the rookie's second pitch. It was the first run allowed by Claiborne after seven straight scoreless outings in the majors.
Granderson homered in the fifth to make it 6-2.
