FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) -- In just two outings, Pedro Martinez is in mid-season form. Martinez pitched five scoreless innings and struck out seven and the Boston Red Sox hit three homers to trounce the Cincinnati Reds, 11-1, in the Grapefruit League. The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed five hits, including a pair of singles to Ken Griffey Jr., and did not walk a batter, throwing 49 of 63 pitches for strikes. In two spring outings, Martinez has pitched nine scoreless innings with 14 strikeouts. Dante Bichette, Trot Nixon and Scott Hatteberg hit solo homers for the Red Sox, who collected 16 hits. Three of the hits were by Nixon. Jason Varitek added three RBI. Loser Elmer Dessens allowed one of the homers and was charged with six runs -- five earned -- and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.
