VERO BEACH, Florida (Ticker) -- John Vander Wal had four hits to lead an 18-hit attack as the New York Yankees outslugged the Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-8, in a Grapefruit League game. Vander Wal, acquired from San Francisco during the offseason, was 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Jim Leyritz had three hits and two RBI and Alfonso Soriano had three hits and scored twice for the Yankees, who roughed up Dodgers starter Kazuhisa Ishii. Ishii (1-1) retired just two batters, allowing six runs, six hits and two walks. Bobby Estalella homered and drove in three runs and Marcus Thames and Scott Seabol also homered for New York, which saw every position player get at least one hit. The beneficiary was Sterling Hitchcock (2-1), who won despite allowing six runs -- one earned -- and four hits in 4 1/3 innings. Jay Tessmer pitched 2 2/3 scoreless frames before Steve Karsay gave up two runs in two innings. Paul Lo Duca and Jeff Reboulet homered for the Dodgers. |
