TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Derek Jeter singled in John Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New York Yankees rallied from an early five-run deficit for an 8-7 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in a battle of Grapefruit League split squads. The Yankees pulled it out after Mike Stanton escaped a jam in the top of the eighth, stranding runners at second and third by getting a flyout and two strikeouts. He got the win after Jeter produced his lone hit in four at-bats. Mariano Rivera struck out one in the ninth for the save. Juan Rivera drove in two runs and Robin Ventura had two hits, an RBI and scored three times for New York. Yankees starter Mike Thurman was ripped in 2 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs and eight hits. He served up a grand slam to Darrin Fletcher in a six-run third. Raul Mondesi had three hits, a sacrifice fly and two RBI for the Blue Jays. Toronto starter Brian Cooper yielded three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings. |
