PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida (Ticker) -- Osvaldo Fernandez had a solid outing and Brian Schneider homered as the Montreal Expos edged the New York Mets, 4-2, in Grapefruit League play. Fernandez did not start, coming on after Scott Strickland pitched a scoreless first inning. He allowed one run and four hits in three innings, walking two and striking out one. Four relievers combined to allow seven hits but just one run over the final five innings, with Darwin Cubillan pitching a shaky ninth for the save. Schneider homered in the fourth off Mets starter Shawn Estes, who gave up three runs -- two earned -- in 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out three. Jeromy Burnitz returned to the Mets and homered in his first at-bat. Burnitz had missed nearly a week to be with his wife, who gave birth to their baby. Schneider, Lee Stevens and Peter Bergeron had two hits each for the Expos. Lou Collier had three hits and Roberto Alomar and Roger Cedeno had a pair apiece for the Mets. |
