TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- Marcus Thames went 2-for-3, including a solo home run, to lead the New York Yankees past the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2, in a Grapefruit League contest.

Robin Ventura and Nick Johnson each went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Alfonso Soriano, Jason Giambi and Shane Spencer also drove in runs for New York.

New York starter Mike Mussina allowed just three hits in six innings, but two were solo home runs to Armando Rios and Jack Wilson. Mussina struck out three batters without a walk for his first win of the spring.

Adrian Hernandez and John Dillinger combined to pitch the final three innings without allowing a hit.

Aramis Ramirez had Pittsburgh's only other hit of the game.

The Yankees have won eight straight after managing only one win and a tie in their previous 14 games.
