FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers broke camp in a big way, banging out 22 hits in a 17-2 Grapefruit League rout of the Boston Red Sox. Carl Everett, Ivan Rodriguez, Santiago Perez and Herbert Perry and David Meliah homered for the Rangers, who broke open the contest with four runs in the eighth and seven in the ninth. Perry and Kevin Mench each drove in three runs for Texas, while Meliah collected three hits. Starter Anthony Telford earned the win, allowing two hits over three scoreless innings. Telford replaced scheduled starter Kenny Rogers, who was scratched for precautionary reasons due to a sore hamstring. He is not expected to miss his first start of the season. Frank Castillo suffered the loss, yielding three runs and five hits over five frames. The Red Sox got their runs on solo homers by Brian Daubach and Trot Nixon. The Rangers conclude their exhibition slate with a pair of games against the New York Mets at the Ballpark in Arlington. Boston heads to Houston for a pair of games against the Astros. |
