CLEARWATER, Florida (Ticker) -- David Wells tossed five solid innings in his final spring start and John Vander Wal drove in two runs as the New York Yankees posted a 4-3 Grapefruit League victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Wells, who finished the spring with a 2-1 record, allowed one run and four hits with no walks and one strikeout. Adrian Hernandez followed Wells with two effective innings in relief, giving up an unearned run and just one hit. Jay Tessmer surrendered a run in the ninth before Steve Karsay recorded the final two outs for the save. Vicente Padilla suffered the loss, yielding three runs and seven hits over five innings. Bernie Williams and Jason Giambi collected two hits apiece for the Yankees, who host the Phillies in their final exhibition game Saturday before opening the season Monday in Baltimore. Mike Lieberthal recorded three hits for the Phillies, including his fifth homer of the spring. Philadelphia also wraps up exhibition play Saturday before heading to Atlanta for Monday's season opener against the Braves. |
