PITTSBURGH 5, ATLANTA 1

BRADENTON, Florida (Ticker) -- Jason Kendall continued his comeback from a broken ankle with two hits and an RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-1, in a Grapefruit League game.

Ivan Cruz drove in two runs and Darryl Brinkley had a pinch-hit, RBI double for Pittsburgh, which tagged Steve Avery for two runs and three hits in the fourth inning.

Avery, who pitched for the Braves from 1990-96, spent two seasons with Boston and last season with Cincinnati before signing with the Braves in the offseason.

Pittsburgh starter Jimmy Anderson allowed one run and three hits in four innings for the victory.

Kevin Millwood, who won 18 games last season for Atlanta, gave up one run and three hits and walked three in three innings.

Rookie Rafael Furcal drove in Atlanta's only run in the third inning.
