Sammy Sosa beat out Mark McGwire by 5 1/2 votes from the 400 major league players polled Elsa Hasch/Allsport

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Chicago Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa, who led the majors in RBIs and runs and came up four short of Mark McGwire's record 70 home runs this season, was selected Tuesday as baseball's player of the year by The Sporting News.

Sosa received 191 votes to McGwire's 185 1/2 from some 400 major league players polled, the newspaper said.

In addition to hitting 66 homers, the second-highest total in baseball history, Sosa drove in 158 runs, scored 134 and batted .308 in sparking the Cubs into the playoffs for the first time since 1989.

The Sporting News also selected the New York Yankees' Joe Torre and San Diego's Bruce Bochy as managers of the year in the American and National leagues. Gerry Hunsicker of Houston was selected executive of the year.
