LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- Home run heroes Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs were among those chosen Wednesday to receive Silver Slugger awards. The awards, instituted in 1980 by Hillerich and Bradsby, the company that makes Louisville Slugger bats, are chosen by managers and coaches. The selections are based on a combination of offensive statistics, such as batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage of a player at each position. Managers and coaches are not permitted to vote for players on their teams. American League winners were: First baseman Rafael Palmeiro of Baltimore, second baseman Damion Easley of Detroit, shortstop Alex Rodriguez of Seattle, third baseman Dean Palmer of Kansas City, catcher Ivan Rodriguez of Texas, designated hitter Jose Canseco of Toronto, and outfielders Ken Griffey Jr. of Seattle, Albert Belle of Chicago and Juan Gonzalez of Texas. In the National League, the selections were: First baseman McGwire, second baseman Craig Biggio of Houston, shortstop Barry Larkin of Cincinnati, third baseman Vinny Castilla of Colorado, catcher Mike Piazza of New York, pitcher Tom Glavine of Atlanta, and outfielders Sosa, Moises Alou of Houston and Greg Vaughn of San Diego. Canseco, Palmer, Easley, Palmeiro and Vaughn are first-time award winners. Larkin has won eight Silver Sluggers, and Griffey and Piazza have claimed five apiece.
