Pursuing a pitcher Orioles turn attention from Clemens to BrownPosted: Friday December 11, 1998 02:22 PM
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Having apparently lost out in the bidding for Toronto pitcher Roger Clemens, the Baltimore Orioles have reportedly turned their attention to free agent Kevin Brown. The Orioles are one of at least four teams pursuing the pitcher at the winter meetings in Nashville. Brown is expected to command a six-year contract worth as much as $85 million, the [Baltimore] Sun reported. Orioles Chief Operating Officer Joe Foss said signing Brown to that kind of contract would not financially strap the organization, even though the Orioles' payroll could hit $80 million next season. "Certainly, Kevin Brown coming to this organization would be a huge economic event," Foss said. "But given the strength of the Orioles franchise, we could comfortably handle it. It can be handled."
