Report: McCarver set to join Yankees Posted: Tuesday February 09, 1999 07:37 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Tim McCarver is close to signing a deal that will allow him call about 40 games for the New York Yankees this season, according to published reports. McCarver, fired by the New York Mets last week after 16 years as the team's analyst, is also Fox Sports' lead national baseball analyst. McCarver said he was unaware of an imminent deal discussed in Tuesday's editions of the New York Post and New York Times. His agent, Bob Rosen, said Tuesday he had not been contacted by the Yankees or WNYW, the Fox affiliate that will televise Yankees games this season. "It's not a done deal," Rosen said. "We haven't even begun negotiations yet, but Tim is interested and I'm just waiting for the call." McCarver's schedule with Fox Sports would force him to miss at least eight Yankees games. "I don't see any problem with Fox accommodating Tim's schedule," Rosen said. McCarver, who has 10 Emmy Award nominations, was fired by the Mets last week and replaced by Tom Seaver, the only New York Mets player to have his number retired by the team. One of the reasons for the change was believed to be because McCarver was often critical of the Mets.
