Garth goofs Brooks' miscue looms large in Padres' loss to BrewersPosted: Saturday March 13, 1999 09:58 PM
PHOENIX (AP) -- A misplay by country-music performer Garth Brooks contributed to the San Diego Padres 2-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. Brooks, playing left field in the ninth, stepped back, then sprinted forward and fell as a sinking drive by Milwaukee's Alex Ochoa fell off his glove. Ochoa was credited with a double and scored moments later on a single to center by Todd Dunn, giving the Brewers the victory over the split-squad Padres. "I feel like I let these guys down," said Brooks, who was hitless in two trips to the plate. "I dropped that ball in the ninth with two out. It just kills me." Brooks entered the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the ninth, Brooks almost gave the Padres a lead. With a runner on second and two out, the Brewers intentionally walked Andy Sheets in order to pitch to Brooks. After taking a fastball from left-hander Horacio Estrada for a called strike, Brooks swung at an 0-1 pitch and lined softly to shortstop Lou Collier in shallow left field. In his initial at-bat, Brooks swung at the first pitch from right-hander David Weathers and hit a line drive to the mound. Weathers, who seemed startled, knocked the ball down and threw Brooks out at first to end the inning. Brooks is now hitless in three at-bats in exhibition play. Jeff Cirillo had two hits and drove in a run for Milwaukee. San Diego scored on a solo homer by Dave Magadan, his first of the spring.
