College football has the BCS. College basketball has the RPI. And now baseball has the CNN/SI Power Rankings, a purely statistical formula to rank the 30 major league teams.

The ranking will be calculated on a weekly basis every Tuesday. All information is based on games through the previous Sunday.

Cleveland holds the top spot for the third straight week, increasing its lead over second-place Boston. Arizona jumps to its highest ranking, a third-place showing after taking two of three from AL West-leading Texas.

  • HIGH RISER: White Sox: 8 spots (No. 12 from No. 20)
  • FREEFALLERS: Mets and Royals: 6 spots (Nos. 16 and 18, respectively, from No. 10 and 12)

    29 25 Montreal Expos (20-33) 67
Back to earth for the ol' Expos.
    30 29 Minnesota Twins (19-36) 54.5
Maybe Billy Haywood from Little Big League can take over.

The CNN/SI Power Rankings combine a number of different statistical factors -- winning percentage, team ERA, run differential, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, pitching ratio (walk+hits/innings pitched), average with runners in scoring position (RISP), road winning percentage and winning percentage in one-run games. The ranking is Rotisserie-style, with teams leading the league in a category receiving 30 points, teams in last receiving one point. The maximum points a team can receive is 300.
