College football has the BCS. College basketball has the RPI. And now baseball has the CNN/SI Power Rankings, a purely statistical formula to rank the 30 major league teams.

The ranking will be calculated on a weekly basis every Tuesday. All information is based on games through Sunday.

The Cleveland Indians hold the top spot in the rankings for the eighth straight week, but the Boston Red Sox weren't so lucky. Thanks to a 1-5 record to close the first half, Boston dropped six spots to No. 9. The Yankees, Braves, Reds and Astros round out this week's top five.

  • HIGH RISER: Athletics: 4 spots (No. 22 from No. 26)
  • FREEFALLERS: Red Sox: 6 spots (No. 9 from No. 3)

The CNN/SI Power Rankings combine a number of different statistical factors -- winning percentage, team ERA, run differential, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, pitching ratio (walk+hits/innings pitched), average with runners in scoring position (RISP), road winning percentage and winning percentage in one-run games. The ranking is Rotisserie-style, with teams leading the league in a category receiving 30 points, teams in last receiving one point. The maximum points a team can receive is 300.
