TORONTO (AP) -- Minutes after David Cone pitched his perfect game, David Wells got his buddy on the phone.

"I've got bigger goose bumps than you do," yelled Wells, who pitched the only other regular-season perfect game for the New York Yankees last season. "I'm glad you did it. Welcome to the club."

The two chatted for a while before the Toronto Blue Jays pitcher handed the phone to another ex-Yankee, Graeme Lloyd.

Wells then walked over to a refrigerator and yelled: "Wow, I'm going to have a beer for Cone."

When Wells pitched his perfect game against Minnesota on May 17, 1998, Cone sat next to Wells between innings, calming his teammate. The two also played together for part of the 1992 season with Toronto.

As Cone was pitching his perfect game, Wells was throwing batting practice to his son in the Blue Jay's clubhouse. An attendant told him Cone had a perfect game through seven innings and Wells saw the final two innings.

"That was a thing of beauty," Wells said. "He's overcome a lot of obstacles in his career and for him to do it in New York, where he is well loved -- He is the man of New York City."

Cone appreciated the call from Wells, who had been his closest friend on the Yankees.

"He said he wanted to fly down here and party with me all night," Cone said.

Wells, however, had to stay in Toronto with his son.

After Wells pitched his perfect game, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani gave him a key to the city. Wells said he expects Cone to get one, too, and that he can't wait to celebrate with him.

"We'll crawl into every spot we want, if we get into trouble we'll unlock ourselves," he said.

He also expects to do commercials with Cone.

"Chicks dig perfect games!" Wells said.
